Re: What age is the oldest person you have met singlehanding and cruising?

My favorite age-related quote is "Life is like riding a bicycle...stop pedalling, and you fall off".

There is a retired Scottish Engineer that sails his 26 Nonsuch singlehanded in Georgian Bay from Dutchmans Cove in Penetanguishene Ontario. He is now 92 and is so great to talk to about life experiences. If there isnt 10 knots+ to play with he wont go and when he does he is out for a few days. 28 years to go to be able to match that myself.

Dock neighbor in Astoria OR was 85... He and his wife lived aboard and day sailed. He was physically healthy, but not really mentally sharp enough to be cruising.

I've met many alpine skiers in their 70s and 80s that are healthy enough to take on almost anything.

Re: What age is the oldest person you have met singlehanding and cruising?

I think my Mom could still do it, but not my Dad. Same age, same health regimen, same exercise, same diet, etc. So you never know, maybe you can, maybe you can't.

But if you don't, then you don't. That is easy and undeniable.

For me personally, I find the more I do, the more I can do.

Fitness happens with an active lifestyle. Cruising -- and by this I mean actually sailing around and across oceans, not just living aboard -- is a very active lifestyle. The motion of the boat at sea works all your muscles, all the time. Your own activities add to this. So you can't help but get fit. When I spent last year cruising and hiking, I lost all the weight I had gained over the previous few decades, and the degradation illnesses -- like back aches, sciatica, sore neck, joint pains, blood pressure, etc., -- all vanished. I mean vanished, no more.

But when I came back to LA, to the house, started driving a sports car again instead of being active, all that junk (pain and fat) came back. Very motivating to get the boat launched!

I am now the age of the oldest cruisers that I knew when I first moved aboard in my early twenties; however, the older guys keep "pushing the envelope".
