Re: What age is the oldest person you have met singlehanding and cruising?

I am 76 and live aboard between girl friends. But I just cruse The Puget Sound, The Salish Sea to The Queen Charlotte's. I would go further off shore but why? Everything I need can be found if this area. Besides I told my last girl friend I would not go out there where the water is deep. My 32' Kettenburg is rigged so I can handle it or at least run for cover. 1Sunseeker

Last year, one of my dock neighbors was having some engine problems; so off went to give him a hand.

I couldn't help but notice Tim was very spry: he was jumping around the boat like a 20 year old... He turns 91 this past November, and has bee living onboard his boat since 1987.

I believe Eric Forsyth is close to 90.

There was a guy in Fiji about 9 years ago on a spray type Roberts design. He claimed to be 84 and was looking to sail back to California to visit the grand kids after another cyclone season in NZ. He reckoned on sailing direct from NZ via a Clipper ship route. No idea what happened to him.

Re: What age is the oldest person you have met singlehanding and cruising?

There's a guy in my marina who is 80 going on 16. I swear he runs circles around everyone. There's also a 76 year old singlehander doing repairs. I swear he stuffed an entire West Marine store in his bilges. Does all his own work and has many many sea miles under his belt. Still spry and expecting many more years.

My Dad was singlehanding as recently as last year. He was 84 then, 85 now. Don't know if he will do any more this year -- he's slowing down a bit. Got caught in a sudden squall last year which spooked him a bit. But he will crew on my boat this summer, God willing. I have to double the stocks of gin on board whenever he's around, however.

Re: What age is the oldest person you have met singlehanding and cruising?

This morning I started my day when my phone sounded off with a text from our Forum wishing me a Happy Birthday.....I'm 69 today, a proper Aquarius....and I won't stop going any time soon. I've never been this age before so how old am I supposed to feel/act?? No reason to slow down just because we have had another birthday. I look forward to each day. I'm not a rich man nor even well off as they say but Happy with each day rising...I go with a Smile on my face knowing there are many that can't do that nor have the will. I look on the "bright side" of "dim situations", if I don't it won't make a difference any way.....

Life is Good if you keepa Smilin....everyone Please enjoy your day......

Saito Minoro, 80. 8 solo circumnavigations, the last one wrong way around, and planning a solo trip through the NW Passage next. He, along with some other, much younger, Japanese friends took us touring around Yokohama and he walked us all into the dirt.

Re: What age is the oldest person you have met singlehanding and cruising?

When asked the "secret" of their active stage performances over the years, into their 60's and now 70's, both Mick Jagger and Steve Tyler have essentially said the same thing. Their advice to staying physically active? Keep moving.

And life on a small boat is a very good way to keep moving, from what I've seen so far. I'm only 63, but I know I was climbing in and out of an engine room at least 20 times yesterday while wiring up my new solar charger controllers.

Some people are young at 90 while others are old at 18. I think a lot of it is genetics. My dad is 87, and mom told me she had to hide his chain saw from him recently. He was planning to cut down, cut up and split an oak that was bugging him. He could, too. She just worries a lot. She's about to hide his ladder, too. There's something on the roof he wants to fix. IF he had ever become a sailor, I have no doubt that he would still be at it.
