Re: What does the name of your boat say about you?

s/v Suede

Been my nickname for a couple decades. Seemed the most appropriate name for the boat. It's instantly identifiable as mine by all who know me. The other nicknames associated with me over the years; 'Taco Breath', 'RC' (rotten colon), & 'Milkdud', were never universally recognised monikers & didn't seem appropriate. So Suede it was, is, and forever will be.

CourtShip. Because (1) my wife is an attorney and I'm a court administrator and our jobs pay for the boat and (2) we inspected the boat and closed the deal on the weekend of the big royal wedding in 2011, and (3) when we have guests along they're almost always a mob of court and legal people, and finally (4) the stress-relief of coffee on the flybridge in the morning reinforces marital bliss.

s/v Loon was named by us after the bird. It also is quite an apt description of her crew.

Travelnik is a combination of the English word Travel, and the Slovak word Putnik, which translates to Wanderer, Wayfarer, Pilgrim.

It's a fun, quirky name, and I think it goes well with a Nomad.

That I'm a Tolkienite

Aldarion was the Heir to the King of Númenor. He was a great captain and adventurer, to the dismay of his father, who wished his son to spend his youth on the island he would one day rule. Aldarion, though, felt the call of the sea, and he built himself a vast ship, larger than any that had been seen at that time. He called it PALARRAN, an Elvish name meaning 'Far-Wanderer', and in it he journeyed the Great Sea to Middle-Earth.

JRR Tolkien, The Silmarillion

We have crew shirts with the flag of Gondor on them and the Tolkien quote "Not all who wander are lost" on the back. I also had a Gondor flag made.

Mine says I "sell steel" for sub sea oil production. That's what paid for her.

Flexible Flyer, because I'm flexible and can fly...

Actually, it's because it folds, and is named after my favorite snow sled when I was a kid.
Fast and unbelievably steerable.

The names of my boats have always been about the boat, not about me.

Re: What does the name of your boat say about you?

I am sadly boatless and mountain-bound at present, but I've already picked out a name for her when I get her! "Stella Maris", which means "Star of the Sea" in Latin, and it is also an ancient title. Bonus points if you know the history of the title. Hopefully what it says about me is that I'm great at picking names...

Edit: actually I have a coracle (because there is nothing so worthwhile as messing about in boats) so I may not be technically boatless, although it is really designed for someone 60lbs lighter so it sinks alot. Fortunately/unfortunately the river is generally only a couple feet deep.... Stella Maris is a good name for a coracle too, since its only about the size of a star in the sky...

Bliss

Because after 23 years of marriage it is the way we still feel with one another. Had we discovered how blissful swinging on an anchor was we woulda bought one years ago.

Red Herring. Kinda made sense for a Russian-crewed boat in a Canadian round-the-cans racing club

First boat: Tomorrow -- because we were so busy in our lives we were always going to go sailing tomorrow.

Current boat: Smart Move -- she came with that name (from England), we kept it because we felt it reflected our move from land to boat and cruising.

Re: What does the name of your boat say about you?

I 've just bought a boat and it is named Perseides II, after googleing it I find that it is a meteorite shower that appears every August in the northern hemisphere. I am not superstitious but I am not going to change the name, (Just In Case). The boat was from Canada.

She:Kon, pronounced "Say-go" is a traditional Iroquois greeting that means "Do you still have the Great Peace?". The Great Peace is the cornerstone of the Iroquois belief system.
