What is Worse, Sun, Wind, Rain?

A rainy day that keeps you inside is a bad day, how about trying to hide from the sun or wind? Seems too much of any of the 3 makes life less enjoyable.

So which is worse in your mind...if any?

Re: What is worse, sun, wind, rain?

Rain, if it is rainy for too long. Sun if it there is no shade. Wind if there is no relief. Cold always.

Whenever I have too much of one of the first three, I always want the opposite. I never want cold.

They all can be bad. They are the reason I moved from an open-cockpit boat to one with a pilothouse.

Re: What is worse, sun, wind, rain?

Depends on whether underway or at anchor/in marina.

U/W: WIND.
Sun is always good - can hide under Bimini or inside cabin;
Excess wind leads to huge seas which cause great discomfort;
Rain washes off the salt from sea spray caused by excess wind. (Obviously too much rain hampers visibility but that situation usually lasts only a few minutes here in the Caribbean.)

At anchor/in marina:
Sun - see above
Wind - just add another mooring line or two and ride it out
Rain - long term can cause Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which tends to bum me out after several weeks.

Re: What is worse, sun, wind, rain?

I was on a small boat for only 9 days. But in those 9 days I found myself trying hide from the hot sun and creating shade by hanging towels around me.

Then in the 2nd day of continuous rain being couped up was kinda driving my crazier than I already am.

I was also in a scary wind. While trying to snap a small piece of sunbrella to it's frame it was starched sideways flapping in the 40kt wind like a flag. What made this even more difficult was I had it lined up wrong...ugh.

The best is a soft rain at night, and a cool breeze and warm sun in the morning.

Cold - I have only been cold during the rain and if things get wet. Cold and wet is the worse!!!

Ditto! Getting hit with ice water is the worst for me. I can take the sun and heat if I can take a dip in the ocean occasionally. But forget the cold rain, then add some wind and I'm done. I hate wearing bunches of clothes.

Yess cold and wet for me. Or hight heat combined with extremely hight humidity. Or high heat no winds even in the shade is torture.

I dont mind the cold for the most part. Wind is ok. Sun there is shade somewhere but add ultra high humidity with doing anything outdoors for me I sweat real bad. I even sweat in the middle of a snow storm working.

Rain is not bad at all either. Get around the 40 degree 4C mark and down to near freezing and add the wind. May be alright with proper storm gear on but without brrrrr. My poor fingers. Can always grow the beard out a little.

Ive been in calm winds with negative 40 degrees -40C its not to bad but the wind is the killer. OTOH in the desert climate at 115 degrees 46F little humidity I was running all around and barely sweat kept hydrated and I was fine.

Its all when the icky stuff combines it gets tricky. Its all about what else is along with any of the weather.

To close I dont like swimming in cold cold water either. Im only 135 :: edit :: pounds 61 kilos :: end edit:: soaking wet not much insulation to me. I get chilly fast.

wondering around with no destionation

Re: What is worse, sun, wind, rain?

one of the most unpleasant meteorlogical experinces i have had was a sand storm in june in the red sea.

it came down in 5 minutes with roasting hot dry wind, zero visibility and lasted about 6 hours,i was still washing red sand off the rigging 6 months later!
