What size USA Flag and International Courtesy Flags

Hello, I'm a new user here. We are purchasing a Lagoon 39 in Caribbean. What size flags are best USA Flag and Courtesy flags for French, British and Dutch?

Thank you.

Re: What size USA Flag and International Courtesy Flags

Welcome to CruisersForum, TakeitEasy
In the past, the national ensign was supposed to be as large as the width of the transom... Not applicable for a catamaran!

However, don't go for too large an ensign: abroad, US and Dutch yachts are often frowned upon for their *BIG* flag. If the ensign trails in the water, it's too big. I suggest you have 3: a large or very large one for special occasions (4th of July...), a medium one for normal use and a small one for gales. Take into account the strength of the ensign staff, too.

For the country flag, always thought it was one inch for each foot of boat length. On the long edge of the flag.

For my 32' boat, a 32" flag. That's what I use. No courtesy flags, yet.

Go into a newspaper shop/stationary shop and buy the local flag there for $2.

As for the US flag... on a US boat some go quite large...

Seriously, buy when u arrive.

That's how you spot the arrogant Americans, Mark.

We're not all that way. And I note you did say "some".

Re: What size USA Flag and International Courtesy Flags

RYA guidelines are:

National:
"Roughly speaking a 3/4 yard Ensign should look right on a boat of 21-26 ft, 1 yard for 27- 34 ft, 1 1/4 yard for 35 - 42 ft, 1 1/2 yard for 43 - 50 ft and 1 3/4 yard for 51 - 60 ft, but some discretion may need to be applied."

Courtesy:
"12" in the fly should look appropriate for 21-26 ft, 15" for 27- 34 ft, 18" for 35 - 42 ft, 22" for 43 - 50 ft and 30" for 51 - 60 ft."

A lot of the BVI Reg flash sailboats have their flags trailing in the water over here in the Med... a few 'Red Dusters' as well.. figure they're trying to leave a 'Clean Wake..'

Personally, I consider that gross disrespect to the flag. On a par with dragging it in the dust.

I assumed it was so they always had a wet rag ready to wash down the transom..

Re: What size USA Flag and International Courtesy Flags

Theres a boat behind me with no Ensign, no Courtesy flag, nothing EXCEPT a huge, and u mean huge pirate flag. (And its at 3/4 mast top so above where a courtesy flag would be.)

Lame, disrespectful and totally 'in your face'

Most countries are pretty relaxed about flags but ...

Many locals don't give a stuff about the environment. They rape their seabeds of conch, lobster and turtles to make money from tourists a d cruisers.

The turtle bit is a fascinating blackmail where local fishermen catch a turtle and ate going to kill and eat it unless the cruisers pay them $200.

The worst of that bit is the cruisers pay up instead of beating the **** out of the fishermen.

As for the mounds of conch shells near every tourist restaurant in the Bahamas.... sickening.

Re: What size USA Flag and International Courtesy Flags

I got over 20 flags on Amazon last year for our Baltic, North Sea cruise.

Did NOT buy "courtesy" flags as they were too expensive, but just bought the standard 2x3 ft flags with grommets.
Each flag cost less than $10.

Discovered I was missing a flag, upon arrival just went to Tourist store and bought a souvenir flag on a stick. Too the stick off and threaded line through it.

Worked fine for the few days were were there.

BTW, flying the Stars and Stripes in northern Europe brought nothing but good comments and waves.

Shame mate.. its a comical ad for a soft drink..
The 'Lobsters' referred to are all the red, pink and peeling slabs of western 'white' meat that scatter onto the beaches every time a Cruise Ship disgorges..
