While many think of Perth Amboy as just another depressed rust belt town, there are some nice areas. It is not crowded, and a favorite place of mine is the Flatiron Bar which just reopened. GREAT burgers and inexpensive food and drinks; easy to walk or ride to also. Additionally, they have a very active yacht club.
Do they still have a Perth Amboy ferry to take you to the SIRT and then the S.I. ferry. I grew up on the south shore of S.I. and made a pledge to myself, early, I would never make a commute to the "city" for employment.

Re: Winter “Stay aboard” in NYC

We spent a summer and two winters at Liberty Landing and very much enjoyed it. Excellent location and well-protected from wind and wave. Dockage for the winter was quite affordable while that for the summer was very high. Electricity is no included in the price. Each boat has its own meter and account with the supplier - forget who they are.

That is an excellent question. The ferry slip is still there and was restored some two decades ago. The ferry from there stopped in the sixties and I don't know of any currently running. It's a shame because the ferries in the NYC area are great, and generally nicer than the trains.

Thanks for your comments!
Having stayed at the transient slip at 79th, why would you want to have a permanent berth there? Water gets really really low at low tide (we draw 4ft and were aground at low tide) the berths suffer from a lot of wave action, prepare for regular and recurring damage and the facilities make "primitive" look like a massive upgrade. I'd look at Liberty marina even if it creates commuting issues!

Re: Winter “Stay aboard” in NYC

I keep my vessel in the water in Safe Horbor Glen Cove L.I. most winters (it’s comming out this winter) i have a Jeanneau 44i it cost me 2400$ from 1st of nov to May 1st. Ask about “wet storage”,I do not live on it, I do not see anybody doing that on my side of the marina, there are 15 boats by my slip the yard putts the bubblers in to protect the vessels and the docks, not sure how stealthy you are but the marina has a dock further up the canal that has some 30 ish boat there you may be able to get away with it.
The water is shut off from December to March so that might be a non-starter.
The bath rooms are open all winter.

Many Safe Harbors marinas are starting to ban live aboards, so be careful.
