I actually didn't use my boom either, too close to the cockpit floor!

My Spinnaker pole worked okay, clipped to the mast and held out with the block. I kept my weight next to the mast though so the force was concentrated on the pin rather than the thin block I have at the top holding the pole horizontal!

On the other side are amateur athletes, who at best can probably hope to maintain their current level of fitness. I've only heard of one person, for instance, who kept a solid body building routine going on the boat (Tacoma sailor mentioned his set up on a previous thread, I believe).

+1!

I think, there is at least one more major group: those who were never fit, moved onto the boat to very quickly become obese. I believe most of my sailing friends are in this one. I believe most of my non-sailing friends belong to the same group anyways.

For the overall tendency is for most of us to gain weight. Cruising is not a sport, it is a pastime. Just like sitting on a sofa surfing channels.

Who wants results will work out hard, moving the bum.

Re: Working Out While Underway

I'm thinking if you've been a big workout guy all your life with weights, running, cycling etc it may be a time to consider the "crosstraining" of sailing especially if coastal cruising.

Using a kayak for example coming and going is a great workout. Just getting in and out of the thing gets interesting.

Entering and exiting the boat without using a ladder.

Then there's hiking.......nature trails

Pulling up the anchor.

Winching (not to be confused with wenching)

Balancing while sailing.

Trying to stay in your berth at a bad anchorage.

Foraging for food (hiking to the nearest store for more beer and nature food (vienna sausages and potted meat)

Fishing......using a high arm cast

Well said...though by exercising and caring for our Bodies we are caring for what God gave us...remember 1 Corinthians 6:19 -- Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;...

On the workout side...it is best to try to find a means to do pull ups...and somehow hyperextensions for the lower back ...swimming when possible helps...elastic band option as well ...it is important to train the muscle slightly above what is normal exertion in a daily routine so that when by accident it is needed you are not injured eg moving anchor etc

Clearly, they don't.

I have seen more fit pole dancers and strippers than cruisers. Now, who is going to heaven?

I think I saw that episode on Ancient Aliens. Was God really an extra Extra-terrestrial?

I prefer to read Terry Pratchett for my fantasy stories.

Re: Working Out While Underway

i prefer to wear a simple rowboat as a hat when making a surf landing, an occurrence encountered often while cruising, i use a plastic rowboat it kinda has flotation.
my reliable propulsion device is a set of oars and old woman arms. hahahahaha
i find the ob crowd is in more need of exercise than is the rowing crowd--
just an observation.
i also keep kayaks.
and a bike for provisioning.

Re: Working Out While Underway

Exactly!

The solution was discovered around 1994. Ever since then, people who are REAL know that all we have to do in order to remain physically fit is to move it.

People who are not real (SIMs, texting, Nintendo, etc.) will always tell you it is OK to eat potato chips and then there are those magic pills from the Amazon or eBay that will do all the heavy lifting for ya! But this, my friends, is a vested BS.

Have fun. Keep on moving.

So if I could get one of these in the stainless waterproof versions with a D.C. Generator I'd buy it!

Why is it unlikely, I am a man of many talents

And there is far more to exegesis than just the interpretation of biblical or even religious texts in general.

Here's a thought/question: If You deny the Bible and it's religion, then why does the mere mention of it send so many of you into a such tizzy?

There must indeed be something real to it.
Obviously you are not schooled in logic.
