Re: Writer friendly Caribbean destinations

As of this writing BTC (Bahamas Telephone Company) has updated their system throughout the country to 3G and many places 4G service. This means you do not (I repeat do not) have to rely on WiFi but the carrier. There are three ways to do this

1) buy a SIM card for your phone
2) buy a BTC phone
3) Roam on their network

I did all three and found number 3 the most economical. My carrier (Sprint) gave me UNLIMITED texting and data usage (hot spots worked on my phone there) and voice calls at .15$ per minute. This "package" was free of charge and didn't cost anything as far as a flat monthly fee. I understand T Mobile has a similar offering.

AT&T hotspot. Works extrememly well here in the US Virgin Islands, average 3Mb. Also pick up the signal in Jost Van Dyke really well from Tower on St John. Get 3-8Mb. On trips to Culebra At&t really hauls ass in the main anchorage around 26Mb.

I've worked a good bit in The Bahamas and have seen some progress there as mentioned by rwells36.

Re: Writer friendly Caribbean destinations

Thank you very much for the feedback. That's great since the cell/wireless bills I would accumulate when I would go there were ridiculous.

I was on BBC.com and on of the new smart phone accessories that caught my eye was a satellite adapter for a domestic cell phone carrier.

Check bbc.com technology section.

Good luck,

Mike
