Re: Best Money You Spent...

Best: Hiring an expert to guide us when we were buying and didn't know enough about boats (I know that's going to be controversial but I've given it a lot of thought).
Worst: Buying a nav program. We actually really like ours but I wish I had looked into the free option first (OpenCPN).

Carol says-->
Best: Our Lavac head Second: Our anchor (Manson)
Worst: Our outboard. We had to buy it in a hurry and so bought new.

We did ours separately and afterwards both agreed with the other person.

Re: Best Money You Spent...

Humm... the best money I ever spent....

That would have to be on the divorce lawyer. I got rid of my nagging pain in the ass, found a truly wonderful woman, and bought a sailboat.

The worse money ever spent.... hummm....... probably on the engagement ring for that nagging pain in the ass, and a 12 volt coffee pot. Neither one was worth a damm, or worked out very well.

Re: Best Money You Spent...

Well there are a few things that worked out real well. But, the one that sticks out is the conversion to electric propulsion from diesel on my 30 foot Nonsuch:
THE BIANKA LOG BLOG: Going electric: Part 1: The why and how
It was either going to be a good idea or a very expensive mistake. About to start my fourth year with it and am very glad I made the switch.

Best: My Jeep 4x4 (despite the fact that it ate back axles).

Worst: Lehman Brothers.

Best: Yamaha 115hp outboard (extremely quiet and super reliable).

Worst: Ex-wife (didn't like boating).

Re: Best Money You Spent...

Best: Super efficient refrigeration upgrade, after years with just an icebox!

Worst: ("CopperPoxy" copper loaded gelcoat). AKA CopperCrapsky... Between the thousands $ originally spent, months to apply "perfectly", and years to sufficiently remove & paint over, it was my biggest mistake ever.

Re: Best Money You Spent...

Best: Manson Supreme Anchor, with way more chain then anyone would use for a boat our size... slept soundly many nights... held through hurricane. Hands down best.

- Engel fridge.
- Xantrex (Link 10) battery monitor
- Solar panel
- Honda 1000 gen
- Oversized cleats fore, mid, and aft.
- Brita water filter (saved hundreds, and trouble over stowing water)

Worst:
- The accursed ATN Topclimber! Oh how I hate that thing!
- West Marine brand batter charger... caught fire while in normal use.
- Tohatsu (mercury, Nissan) 4 stroke 6hp outboard.. vibrates, and tiny zinc lasts about 3 days.

Re: Best Money You Spent...

I've read so much of the "flip side" that I'll have to claim the reverse. The best money ever spent: $16 for a total wedding cost in 1970 that left me with a woman ready to live aboard and cruise 41 years next month.

Re: Best Money You Spent...

Best: Plans and Parts to build my own Bimini Top for about $100.

Worst: Aft stay legs I measured wrong and bought from West Marine. That might still turn out well, I need to replace the aft stay in a year, so... I'll just shorten it up a bit.
