There are persistent rumors of one at Bribie Is., too, but I've never seen a picture or heard any believable documentation.

Thanks,

Re: Croc Infestation

I must say that crocs did reduce our enjoyment of our trip from Brisbane to Darwin a few years ago. We did encounter one on an offshore island several miles from the mainland. They are incredible beasts for sure. It was also not reassuring that the locals all used 'tinnies' for dinghies while the foreigners all had inflatables.

Hard to understand! wonder how long they would allow one to exist in Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra... where he might just gobble up a politician? (for non-Aussies, this lake is right in front of the Parliament and other gov establishments).

Jim

There's more political capital and money to be made in the politics of fear of terrorism than fear of crocs!

Google "Crocodile caught Mary river"

Apparently 3.8m, so big enough to give you a nip.

The OP in this thread?

"The headline in the Fraser Coast Chronicle for Monday October 24

CROC ATTACKS COW NEAR THE MARY RIVER

The Mary River flows into the Great Sandy Straits a couple of hundred miles north of Brisbane in the state of Queensland in eastern Australia."

Thanks, Stu, I had a Cruise-heimer's moment and flat out forgot where Fraser Is. is. Mega dumb.

Quite obviously its to keep the number of cretins under control.

Similarly , if you want to play on the freeway you can hardly complain when you get run down.

In the territory the population of salties is quoted at numbers between 100 K
and 250 K. Around 200 plus? a year are trapped and relocated? out of
the harbour each year. (tracking studies show they move hundreds of miles in range)

Lets say for arguments sake we bump off half the population of crocs, so now they are only dragging 100 out of the harbour each year.

Is It now safe to swim?

Hopefully those that are advocating for a cull think it is, and take a dip.

Personally I love to see these creatures in the wild. If you think the North of Australia looses its appeal because of the crocodiles, then please stay away and let the rest of us enjoy.

There are a lot more dangerous things hanging about in Canberra Jim.

There is an old adage:
No mans life, liberty or wealth is safe whilst the legislature is in session.

I'm familiar with crocs, having grown up in PNG and lived and worked throughout Northern Australia from Wydham to Townsville. I put blood sweat and tears into Northern Australia thank you very much.

And I have a constant connection to Northern Australia back to the first European settlers of Far North Queensland.

It only took a few shark bites in Southern Australia for Southerners to scream bloody murder and install shark nets and drum lines up and down the South East coast.

Yet blow ins from the South and Southerners who have never visited the North think it is quite OK to tell Northerners it's OK for the crocs to rule Northern waters.

I am just suggesting reasonable controls. I don't mind them taking tourists when they are in obvious no go areas. Reasonable controls, that's all.

I've spent time in Florida where they cull alligators. Plenty of them still around but most of the beaches are safe to swim.

Southerners wonder why Northerners vote for fringe parties like Katter and One Nation. Katter will win again, partly because he says "Cull the crocs". I prefer one of the major parties but they are going to keep losing to the lunatic fringe until they start listening to the issues of concern to Northerners.

There is a front page story on the NT Times today about a house which burnt down, the good news being that the family was able to save their pet salt water croc.

Now that's funny. Poor bloke was probably terrified and disoriented being out there at night and thought the rock was a croc.

Re: Croc Infestation

I've pulled into reef marina Port Douglas, we are on E finger right at the end. At low tide this afternoon there was a croc on the bank approx 100m from the boat. Apparently theres a 5m one that is seen around the marina area as well.
No cleaning the prop here.

Parks,
I think an American crocodile has as much in common with its Australian cousin as our Chocolate Lab does with a Grey Wolf.
I have never seen one myself, however I know several Australian AG pilots and they have a very health respect for big "Salties".
I think they are one of the very few animals that will actively hunt humans, Polar Bears are the only other that comes immediately to mind
