As a kid of about 15 or so a friend and I were out fishing just off of Dog Island Fl for those that know the place, caught about a 5' sand shark and walloped it with the shark bat and brought it aboard to remove the lure.
That is when it became unstunned, we were in a 17' bow rider, and Billy and I spent almost all day in the bow waiting for Mr Shark to die, ice chest with anything to drink was back there with him, and of course we had no shade either.
Lesson I learned was if you catch a shark, the lure is gone, just cut the leader and let it go, do not bring in on board.

Today, there are too many gators in FLA and too many are being fed by people which is really bad news.

I have seen many places that look empty of gators in the daytime but the place is full of gators. If someone went into the water in these places, they likely won't make it out.

The crocs will go as far south as they can or want.

My FIL ran into a big gator in NC many decades ago. The gator was in a small pond off a river and it was HIS pond. Hair went up on the FIL's neck, the gator was bigger than his canoe, so at least 16+ feet. FIL and canoe out of there since it was obvious that was gator territory.

Dan

Make no mistake, Florida gators aren't afraid of humAns. They had plenty to eat or would not hesitate to eat you...

As another Florida resident, I agree. It takes a lot to scare a Florida gator.
Oddly enough, Florida crocodiles are pretty shy.

Yep, pretty sure that would cure me of the urge to get in a small boat forever. And that's saying something coming from me!

Ever read this guys account of a similar incident? Really gets across the horror...

They don't usually go North of Miami but I think they might get as far North as Palm Beach once in a while. A pair of them lived in the lake by the University of Miami Student Union for a while. No students went missing.

One showed up on the canal bank behind my house in South Miami. He only stayed a couple of days and I couldn't get near him.

Until recently there was a lone male crock living near the fort in the Dry Tortugas. He started to get a little too friendly so the rangers moved him up to the Everglades. They're hoping he'll find a girl friend up there.

The small lake I spent many years swimming in had gators but we never had any problems. We would spend all day in the lake in the summer and I mean all day. Go in right after breakfast, take lunch down to the lake, and only get out of the water for dinner. Often we would go out and fish from the shore, or the floating raft, and never had a problem with a gator. We could seem them but the left us alone. Now, I did have a snake strike at me from under the dock...

Not sure I would swim in the same lake today. Too many stupid people feeding or trying to play with them.

Later,
Dan

So many make the mistake of feeding them then they expect it from humans then continue to get closer to them.

Then the unknowing person comes along at feeding time and then becomes the feed...

Think of fishing boat Orca's fate (recall the movie "Jaws"). Definitely get a steel boat unless one wants a shark to ram your hull's wooden planks or crush your transom.
