Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

I don't agree that they are only for big boats. I lived aboard my 24' Seabird Yawl at anchor for 10 years and had a beanbag in the cabin. Not only was it a great place to sit, but I would sleep in it when it was too rolly for the bunk.

I designed the saloon of our cat around having 2 bean bags. These live on a platform in the main saloon but can be used anywhere in or on the boat. When happy hour rolls around we thow them up on the cabin top and my wife passes the beer and chips up through the dumbwaiter (hatch). Friends have several small ones that they throw in the cockpit for seating.

We got ours at "Big C" in Phuket. The beans are in their own bag and the outer cover is removable for washing.

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

Humh, never thought about it, but guess not so many folks on the cruiser sailor site ever go offshore in sport fishing boats. Marine bean bags, made for the purpose of providing great seating when underway or at rest, are commonly used in these boats. I don't think making your own would be very attractive, given the options and price levels.

There are several manufacturers, but Ocean Tamer is well known, well regarded.
For example, try the medium teardrop shaped bag, and pick your own color combo, here

I have a bean bag chair, which hangs from the gantry when not being used for its normal purpose.

What is a "gantry", in this application?

Gantry across the back of the boat holding solar, wind generator, the passarelle and a number of different aerials, as well as being part of the davit system for the dink.

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

I just ordered two sunbrella covered bean bag chairs for the cockpit and was not sure how they would work out but after reading this thread I am really excited to get them and start using them.

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

I made 2 bean bags from sailbag material (breathable and washable). I cable tied the zip in order to stop any accidental opening.

Perfect anywhere on the boat, especially when heeling over. [if i could get the cat off]

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

My old Allied Seawind Ketch had a forward facing steering wheel. A beanbag from WalMart (cheap) made a really comfortable place to drive from. Put it on the downhill side but try not to go to sleep.

Exactly, lot's of small fishing boats, (including me), use them for beds/seats when underway. Kick them out of the way or tie to the T-top when not needed. They will conform to any shaped storage space. And they float.

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

Most bean bag chairs I've seen on the market these days aren't full of the plastic beans that they used to be, now they are usually filled with a foam material, mine had that egg carton foam mattes you lay out on beds torn up into little pieces (LoveSac and Puff Chair are like this). I would recommend taking some of the material out to form to you space and stick all your foam into a water proof bag than wrap the chairs cover back over this. Those foam pieces soaked with water wouldn't be fun.

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

I have 2 bean bag chairs and love them. We have used them as pillows in the cockpit on night trips. I put them under my knees when sitting in the cockpit chair and it acts like a recliner and my dogs LOVE them!

Re: Cruisers Using Bean Bag Chairs

The marine bean bags - that I mentioned above as being in wide use on fishing boats - are intended for the purpose; sold for use on open boats. The folks that make them know about salt-water environments. I think the overall design and construction goes a long way to eliminating the concerns about the things getting wet, or the inside material escaping.

Why not put actual beans in 'em? Emergency rations and a source of wind when becalmed.
