Definitely sitting in rough weather. Otherwise it is over the side.

Re: Do You Pee Standing Up

Seems like there might be a few who have never been to sea when its rough, windy and cold. Almost impossible to sit on a dunny seat at 45deg especially having taken off your harness/lifejacket, then your wet weather jacket, got your wet weather pants around your ankles, your mid layer bear suit around your ankles and your thermals over your ankles over all of the other gear. The floor of the head which doubles as a wet locker is sloshing with putrid water so you try to hang onto your gear to stop it getting saturated, one hand holding on to the handhold to prevent yourself from being thrown off the throne. Because the head has been used for urinating in the build up of crystals has blocked all the diaphram valves and there is a backwash of sewerage sploshing your nether regions. and all that for a pee. Not for me I'm afraid. My wetweather gear has bottom up zips so that I can get through all layers without losing warmth and spray resistance, keep my lifejacket and harness with lifeline attached in place and find a kneeling position on the lee side to take a leak. If down below/offwatch one of those urine flasks can be found on every boat I have ever sailed. Much easier to brace oneself securely in the head when standing up.
On my boat you pee standing or kneeling, women are encouraged to pee in the flask simply because urine and salt water block the head.

Aft head that is amidships makes it easy, I put in a single loop teak handrail. Easy to stand up. Forward heads are a lot different.

... of course in the deep blue, the cockpit can easily be the best 'head', especially when being regularly washed out by 5+ metre swell... No point going anywhere then, with Lifelines secured, hatches battened n all.

Re: Do You Pee Standing Up

I pee in a laundry detergent jug and dump it overboard , it makes no sense to pee in the toilet and then chase it down with water filling up the holding tank prematurly.the detergent jug is perfect as it has a good handle, a nice big opening and a secure screw on lid.

What Frant said....

I can't take a slash while squatting on a standard yacht toilet... it would involve bending the pants python back on itself... In heavy weather the mind boggles at drama of stripping to that degree just to take a leak. I just brace in the doorway and go for it.** Mind you mine is a moulded shower enclosure below waist level with its own sump pump. Cleaned and washed down daily , with a bucket of seawater when offshore. On watch and can't get below for whatever reason..... cockpit sole... same washdown regime after the weather moderates.

Re the urine/saltwater issue... I insist on twenty pumps after a leak, 40 after a dump.... No pongs.... vastly reduced crystal buildup. No I don't have a holding tank... it goes straight to sea... fish fornicate in the sea.... and lets not even think about blue whales.

** what about the wimin? I hear you ask.... what they do in their head is their business... we have 'his and her' heads...

Final frontier of male freedom...
Proudly stand and point...
Too big to hold in one hand...
Blah blah blah...

Now I know why they're called sea cocks!

I have it on questionable authority that:-
That is a direct result of the same magnification factors at sea that result in the size of the fish, whales, freighters, mermaids etc being truthfully stated yet obviously factually unsupportable.
The individual is blameless in so reporting the 'facts' as he or she sees them, it a natural phenomena beyond their control.
My questionable authority is not here at the moment so I'm able to type this for the edification of all or some.
Cheers,
Mac

Off course you all know why the sea is salty?

Sailors piss in it....

Re: Do You Pee Standing Up

I request all crew onboard (male and female) to urinate in the cockpit..........whilst standing on their heads .

I do that because I am Captain and my word is the LAW and regulating the bodily functions of others gives me the sense of empowerment that I lack elsewhere in my life. and I have a horror of bodily fluids.

Plus it means that the head does not need cleaning frequently as I like the bacterial effect from the build up of airborne fecal matter on surfaces. Especially on toothbrushes:-
