I thought that was why the manufacturer put in those conveniently spaced hand holds on the cabin roof. Maybe I mis-understood their intentions and they were actually meant to be used as hand holds. Looks like you learn something new every day

Re: Dumb Questions Or Comments Aboard Yachts

Quite a few years ago at the boat show">MIAMI boat show I was showing clocks and barometers. A guy comes up and asks if that is a "chronometer" to whichI mentioned it was a simple quart movement and worked very well.

He then stated "I celestial navigate and I use this" and showed me his "Rolex" which was clearly a fake. I then asked him if he had a fake sextant to go with the fake rolex?

His look was telling.... but the look on his girlfriend was priceless!

It's not fake, it's a replica.

"There are no dumb questions"
Yes there are.

When your 3 year old asks "where does poop come from?" -- that's not a stupid question.

When a 25 year old asks the same question.. That's a dumb question.

Some things also apply - like sitting on a boat in the ocean and wondering about the height above sea level.

So...if I'm sitting on paddle board in Tahiti and look at my GPS for altitude in ASL, will it say the same thing when sitting on a paddle board off the Bay of Fundy at high tide during a full moon? What about low tide?

Dumb questions?

Re: Dumb Questions Or Comments Aboard Yachts

Me (living in Minnesota): Yes, we are taking a sailing vacation to the BVI for about 10 days.

Friend: How are you getting your boat down there?

Me:

Me: Yes, we plan to cruise the caribbean

Friend: Don't you worry about pirates?

Me: You mean, the Pirates of the Caribbean? I think that is in Disney World.

And, not to start a discussion on the topic, but I am continually shocked at the number of close friends who ask if we plan on taking a gun with us. "You have known me for how long? I have never had a gun and you have never heard me even talk about a gun in my otherwise normal life. Why on earth would I have one now?"

Not in the slightest - but that wasn't the context of the earlier example. With a more complex context, there could be lots of great discussion about the earth's model inside the gps, the accuracy of a vertical measurement vs the horizontal measurement, the geometry of satellite positioning. Tides/etc in relation to MSL. The fact that sea level can change, the relative height of the land can change. etc..

But my reading of the prior comment (which I riffed on) - the context was a question that (hopefully) a basic understanding of "sea level" was enough.

And my point being at some point the questions are pretty silly. Possibly my poop example was better

This is probably a dumb question but does anyone know where I can get some prop wash? My prop is fouled and I have been looking online but can't find anyone who carries it, not even West Marine.

I believe it's in the same store with the left-handed smoke shifter and the mail buoy.

If your prop is foul, you probably need to walk it more often. Otherwise it gets fat and foul.
