Re: Earth Wind Map

Perpetual Ocean is great too, but the wind map is real time and interactive. Would be neat to see both together.

For those of you in the US, here's the Earth Wind Map's predecessor which is also conveniently viewable on Safari on a mobile device-

Re: Earth Wind Map

Clearly this has gone viral: After being tipped off by a friend, I wrote about this yesterday, and this morning I heard our local radio station host claiming he's tweeted it to all his followers.

To most people, it's just a cool graphic, but if you are a sailor who has figured out the various synoptic chart presentations, or who is trying to learn them, it's like when Dorothy leaves behind monochromatic Kansas for technicolour Oz.

I hope the site's servers can handle the load!

On which day is this? It seems to be blowing in the wrong direction in some places.

Re: Earth Wind Map

Are there any instructions for the site? I notice if you click and hold for a moment it'll give you Lat & Att w/temp. And wind speed at the curser location, which is way off, most of the time. Double clicking will zoom in.

It you click on the word "Earth" in the bottom left corner it will show you the time of the data and information about the model it is using. It will also allow you to change the model.

I turned on my black light and play Inagaddadavida by Iron Butterfly and that made it really cool!

Yes, it has elements of that for anyone who may recall the term "trip toy".

I think it updates every three hours, so what you are seeing is like a video snap shot of the winds at any given moment. It would be really great if you could see a sort of time lapse version that would show how the winds change through the seasons.

One of my favorites is to look and see how topography influences wind directions.

Re: Earth Wind Map

Amazing. I wouldn't want to be anywhere east of Newfoundland at the moment.

Del the winds are at the 1000 hpa level so not what you would measure on the ground or what your local weather station would forecast.
