Re: Financing Older Boats

Trident Funding in Alameda,CA was doing older boat loans last time I checked for a friend.

I know Progressive will do full coverage on older boats up to a certain amount.

Boat US as well...but they seemed to have made some major changes within the past year or so (such as literally tripling premiums...even in non major storm areas).

Essex Credit - they did older boats AND liveaboard, but I just checked their site and they said no older than 1998.

Where are you and the boat?

Lastly, why not liability only? If you research thru the insurance threads these past few years insurers are making demands that are making some customers leave and go liability only. Such as demanding surveys more often, replacement of rigging too soon, or tripling premiums without any claims.

In the yard last year I met a lovely couple who cruised Mexico for 20 years with a gorgeous, well maintained Westsail 43....all that tIme they didn't even have liability insurance! They self insured down there and just bought liability for the first time just to be able to haul out here in California. I took from their example that:
A) Be able to afford to self insure, if not don't buy a boat (or go less expensive).
B) Cruise somewhere with cheap but okay labor so you can afford major repairs.
