Question How Many Folks Are Sharing Your Name ...

Just as a matter of impulse I entered my Forum name into Google Search.... there's sure a lot of Boatman 61's out there...

This was on Cruisecritic.com by Boatman61
Hello everyone. My wife and I are sailing out of New York on the Caribbean Princess at the end of May. I was wondering if it was OK to bring a couple of bottles of wine on board? Also if anyone could give me some info on the Chef's Table and how to book it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Seems I'm having a ball... got to cut down on the wine tho'...
do not remember a damn thing about that Cruise...

Google your real name! It turns out that there are only so many ways to form 26 letters into names for people.

Heh, I don't know. Googling Last_Mutineer only turned up the few posts I've made on this forum so far, and googling my own name still only turns up stuff related to me on the first page.

Actually the permutations are 26 to the 8th which is a number at least a magnitude greater then the numbers of folks on the earth and that's just eight letters. Who knows how many combinations are pronounceable but Oxford says this:

"This suggests that there are, at the very least, a quarter of a million distinct English words, excluding inflections, and words from technical and regional vocabulary not covered by the OED, or words not yet added to the published dictionary, of which perhaps 20 per cent are no longer in current use. If distinct senses were counted, the total would probably approach three quarters of a million."

.75M known English words who knows how many "nonsensical" but pronounceable variations exist!

Re: how many folks are sharing your name...

What I'm finding difficult is finding a unique or at least not common as dirt boat name.

Every time I think I've found something I looked on the gov web site and find dozens of boat owners already had the same idea.

Don't necessarily need to be the only one in the world (though that would be nice) but hate to be one of hundreds.

I could always find something in Welsh or Polish with too many consonants but then it would be unpronounceable and every time I got on the radio I would spend 10 minutes repeating the name and then spelling it four or five times.

Don't pick 'Meridian' LOL I have met a few.

I thought Sea Life would be pretty common.... but the first other one I have met was just 2 weeks ago. In the same bay! Said hi and we had a good chat. But he moved off a few days later to head north.

Don't go the Welsh or Polish names either because if you have to ring it in on the VHF it can be a spelling pain LOL

Great one I read in an Australin news story a name translated into Pillipino means a naughty bit of anatomy
Do a Google translate on everywhere you intend to go??????????

Or just call it what you want and stuff everyone else

Well, I just looked and only one boat comes up with the name Make Me Laugh, and that is mine. We changed the name back to the original. *we are the third owners*

Heh. In my previous life as a geek mercenary I used to admin a site that had around a million members. One day, whilst sitting around the office, I was trying to prove a point to a co-worker about why I was the BOFH when it came to passwords. I did a simple search in the database and discovered that over ten thousand folks used their username as their password, and somewhere north of five thousand just used "password" Both of those paled in comparison to people who used some permutation containing own name, and that doesn't even count anyone who even slightly obfuscated it (I wasn't curious enough to get that complicated). I can easily see how on a popular site there could be 60 other "boatmans." Or one already born in 1961. Or one who was 61 when they made the account.

We (Americans at least) spend our formative years enduring education specifically designed to crush the creativity out of us. And yet we wonder why people seem to fall into patterns. Please don't tell my wife the teacher I wrote this last paragraph

Thanks. Guess I'll have to take that name off my list.

Just for laughs I checked the USCG documented vessels names

https://www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov/st1/Coa...selByName.html

Found 3 vessels names "Sea Life" and 2 "Sealife". Pretty good considering that even names I thought would be unusual and unique showed 30-40 other boaters thought so as well.

Now that's an idea. Name my boat "What You Want". Have to think about that one.
