I ain't no expert

I recently let myself get in too deep in a thread yesterday. I wish to make it clear, I ain't no expert! And I mean I'm not an expert in anything or any topic!

I'm just someone with a boat who went down the normal learning curve. Have no special training, haven't read a bunch of technical books, haven't crossed the ocean 6 times in a storm, only been sailing 5 years, etc etc.

I have a whole thread admitting this if you search for it.

I'm just someone with my own opinions and beliefs formed from my own experiences and either reinforced or dispelled by things I read on places like Cruisers Forum. I may be correct and then I may be wrong. I may toe the line of the group position or I may believe it is just outdated crap. I don't accept the "everybody knows that" type of things as given true boat facts.

I'm sure most people understand this about me, but I suddenly feel the need to protect a few from me! So please beware.

There are a few CF people that I believe are pretty good experts in a given topic., but I could even be wrong about this. But I don't feel there are as many as you may believe and a lot of "experts" will try to trick you with a long technical posting that they just read somewhere else.

So for any other "non-experts" here that feel like outing yourself feel free to post as such.

Beware of experts who identify themselves as such. Experts' statements show how much they know, in a given area. Mauritz

CF is an online forum, and as such, take it all with a grain of salt. Here's a few quotes to help us along.

"No man remains quite what he was when he recognizes himself."
- Thomas Mann

Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll buy a funny hat. Talk to a hungry man about fish, and you're a consultant. -Scott Adams

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them. -George Bush (1924 - )

The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

Don I think you sell yourself short.

Give you opinion and let others be the judge.
It's rare that I don't log into the forum and learn something.

We are very previliged on CF. There are experts in almost every field. When they post I listen.

Don, a wonderful, fresh post! Or as I have for a signature on another forum:

"When I was a boy, what was so was so, what was not was no.

Now that I'm a man, things have changed a lot, some things nearly so, some things nearly not.

Is a puzzlement."

Sometimes I feel like adding a 12 page disclaimer at the end of my posts - but I figure that those who need it won't read it - so I give folks the benefit of the doubt (that they don't beleive I am sitting on a mountain writing on tablets of stone!) - plus it fits in with me being lazy .

My compromise is rarely claiming anything as undisputed and trying to include lots of if, buts and maybes with the goal of helping folks puzzle out own answers rather than spoonfeeding 'em - which nonetheless when seen as "only" opinions can upset those looking simply for facts. Especially on subjects where there are no easy universal answers . Some things are a no win scenario .....

......But I come from a school of thought that says 2 plus 2 often enough equals four not to need to use fingers to count that high . Which in practice means I have worked out stuff like that pouring gasoline on my head whilst smoking a ciggarette is (probably) not a great idea - without either having done that (well, not at the same time!), nor having the scars to prove it - simply for the satisfaction of others. I also like to consider that my stupidity does have limitations (everyone needs a delusion or 2 ) and that includes not being a guinea pig just in case others may one day want an easy online answer.

In regard to OP (Don) - one thing he is (IMO) an expert on is in making Hunters seem like normal boats . and I genuinely mean that in a good way. Honest injun - probably done more for the Hunter image than most by the simple "trick" of not going all Multihull style mental on folks (no matter that no doubt patience sorely tried!).

Re: I ain't no expert

I believe an expert is someone that has been given that status by the expert who taught them. That is kind of self serving for experts to be qualifying experts. But what do I know? This is in no way an endorsement of experts or the qualification system used. I would like to add that I am no expert and damn proud of it with scars to match. lol

Re: I ain't no expert

I am a terrible writer. It is very difficult for me to properly convey what I am thinking with a typewriter.

I am an amateur boat builder. My welds are ugly and at times have porosity.

My design ideas are to self-centered and would never work for a large cross section of people.

I have zero off-shore sailing experience.
