NATO Conference

Apart from having asked me every question under the sun, and ruining my morning out, sailing in the Bristol Channel for the next week will not be happening for me.

Lot of military presence, I mean a lot. Going to have the pleasure of 7 warships.

Far be it from me to be the Westerly Centaur that causes the next war.

sheesh! Going to cost over a hundred million Sterling just for security and in order to justify it, Britain raises the official threat level to "severe" even though they admit there is no actual threat that has been made.

Its all pants.

Re: Nato conference

Don't know the reason for the RN messing around in your sailing grounds but I'd be very concerned about terrorism If I lived in Britain, France or other European Countries with large Muslim immigrant populations. You've got large numbers of disaffected young men and women fighting with ISIS and other similar terrorist groups. With ISIS controlling significant oil output in Syria and Iraq and their extorted kidnaping ransoms, they have the money to mount sophisticated terrorist operations anywhere. Don't know whether you'll allow these trained militants back in your country but it probably doesn't make any difference. If they want to come back and bring the Jihad with them, they will get back by other means.

Not to say that the US is immune as we are probably their desired extra territorial target, just that we don't have as many people being trained in throat slitting and beheading in these wars of the Caliphate.

So I wouldn't be so upset about a few RN Ships hanging about. They are getting paid for whether they are hanging out in your neighborhood or some other. Oh, by the way, we had a couple of buildings fall down in NYC when our intelligence people didn't have a specific threat to follow up on.

Weavis, I hope it turns out to be just an exercise. Big scary war ships are expensive, but be glad they are on your side.

Re: Nato conference

These ISIS guys have a spectacularly bad attitude, as do their supporters. I wonder how long it will be safe to cruise in The Med? I live and cruise near a huge sub base. You get accustomed to complying with their security needs. Weavis, you should just go sail and let them look you over. They have a job to do, let them do it.
I do not envy the UK in what will be needed to deal with such a pernitious domestic situation. It might be as bad as the IRA was before it gets better.

Re: Nato conference

You should see what they have to deal with out in Hawaii: Exercise RIMPAC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

42 vessels in this one pic from 2014: Exercise RIMPAC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I would say that that's a lot of Democracy in one image, but there were Chinese ships there too (and hosted by Americans, if I wanted to upset some people).

There is also a missile range that they close down once in a while to shoot something out of the sky. But I guess they have a lot more open ocean around there for everybody to play in.

Re: Nato conference

Its not an exercise.
Its the meeting of all the heads of NATO countries including Obama.
They will be staying in the Celtic Manor Hotel about 1,3 miles from my house.

I hear all the crap about how it benefits the town or city..... but it never does. The disruption to every day business is unbelievable.

I wish they would pick an Island somewhere to do this....

Don't pick Bermuda please ( although we could do with the tourism ).

We had our share of this when the USN stored bar-b-que missiles here

During the Cold War, we had a USAF Strategic Air Command base, a USN Anti-submarine ship and aircraft base, a large RN nuke sub base, and the RCN/NATO Western Atlantic Anti-submarine listening HF/DF base. Made Gibr. loo.k like a waterpark.

Any golf courses nearby?

Seriously, I believe this will turn out to become a historical meeting where nations of conscience lay out the groundwork to respond to organized terror in a much more forceful and sustained manner.

I admire your optimism Sir, but I bet they don’t. Fella’s like Vlad know they haven’t changed much from “Paper Tigers.”

Google the Celtic Manor Newport Wales

Ryder cup Golf course. Obama will be there.

Historic? There is so much to say, wrong forum to do it on. Suffice it to say that I have no faith in news reports and that all roads lead to the destruction of the West and some roads are within rather than approaching.

Good food there. I envy them that.

Would they stay anyplace else? That's why they are called "fat cats".
