Re: Nautical Oddities

David Morris says he was "stunned" to look out to sea from a village in Cornwall, in southwest England, and see a giant ship seemingly suspended in mid-air over the water. It wasn't his eyes deceiving him, but a rare weather phenomenon that causes the optical illusion.
'Superior mirages' occur because of the weather condition known as a temperature inversion, where cold air lies close to the sea with warmer air above it. Since cold air is denser than warm air, it bends light towards the eyes of someone standing on the ground or on the coast, changing how a distant object appears.

I heard that S.H.I.E.L.D. was having budget cut backs because of the vid, but this is ridiculous...

Are you kidding me? Design brief: Build something expensive, decadent, floating, and it has to look it sails.

Re: Nautical Oddities

Saw the YouTube video of it "sailing" yesterday.
That "thing' has to be at least twice as long (without growing even more higher) to even become remotely attractive.

The interior is not as terrible looking as the exterior, but what where they thinking when drawing up this ugly duckling?
Someone surely burnt a lot of money on this.
They will get a lot of press from it, but, maybe that's their only real reason of being.

Baby grand piano?

From that video I would not say it sails, but it does wallow at a pretty good clip.

Hamstringer is a pretty good name for it though.

Re: Nautical Oddities

Q: If everyone on Earth sat down in the ocean, how far would the water rise?

A: About 0.00012" to 0.00024 inches, depending.

Currently, there are almost 8 billion people on Earth. Human beings come in all sizes, from tiny babies to large adults. Let’s assume the average size is 5 feet tall – a bit bigger than a child – with an average volume of 10 cubic feet. Only half of each person’s body would be submerged when they sit down, so only 5 cubic feet adds to the water level. With 8 billion people total, you can calculate 5 x 8 billion which gives a whopping 40 billion cubic feet that would be added to the oceans.
We divide the 40 billion cubic feet of volume, over the 140 million square miles of ocean, and find the rise in sea level would be about 0.00012 of an inch, or less than 1/1000th of an inch.
If everyone completely submerged themselves, this would double the answer to 0.00024 inches, which is still only about the width of a human hair.

I believe that The diameter of human hair varies greatly, between 17 μm to 181 μm [microns].
? 0.00063" to 0.0071" ?

Do you own a micrometer? 63/100,000s is barley visible, more like chinchilla fur. .0071” would be an Asians hair.

I DO own a micrometer; but I don't thinks that's how a hair is normally measured.
