Hmm. And perhaps the Admiral demands Moet & Chandon to fill the swimming pool, too?

PS. on Edit: You must be an oldie if you remember when conspicuous consumption was an issue?

Re: Nautical Oddities

"Lost underwater cities that have re-emerged”

There’s more lurking under the surface of our oceans, rivers and lakes than mysterious mammals and strange sea creatures. Divers and explorers have rediscovered a surprising number of underwater cities that were long forgotten or had been written off as the stuff of legends. From breathtaking monuments and temples that have been submerged in lakes to entire villages standing under the sea, here are some of the incredible lost cities that have been found in the hidden depths.

"The ruins of Baia – or Baiae – are scattered under the surface of the Gulf of Naples, not far from a much more famous ‘lost’ city, Pompeii. Like its equally ill-fated neighbour, Baia was an ancient Roman town that fell victim to volcanic activity. But, rather than being submerged and frozen in time under a flow of lava, it’s believed Baia’s residents fled the town before it was swallowed by the rising water levels.
The remnants of the sunken city appear more like an aquatic sculpture garden than somewhere people lived. But then, even during its peak from around 100 BC to AD 500, Baia didn’t really belong in the real world. It was known as a playground for the fabulously, raucously rich – a resort city reserved for the Roman elite including Julius Caesar, who had a villa there.
Baia has even been described as “the Las Vegas of the Roman Empire” due to the hedonistic happenings there. This was where the highest echelons of ancient Roman society came for parties and blowing off steam. Surviving statues – some headless, others remarkably intact – now scatter the seabed.
That past was long forgotten and hidden in the ocean – along with the city’s fine Hellenistic statues, busts, columns and frescoes – until the 1940s, when an aerial photo revealed structures just below the surface. Following further investigation over the next few decades, it was eventually designated a protected marine area – Parco Archeologico Sommerso di Baia – in 2002. It’s usually open to divers who can explore underwater villas and grottoes embellished with marble nymphs ..."

Giant bite photographed on huge 15-foot great white shark
Photographer Jalil Najafov took the photo of a lifetime while diving in Isla Guadalupe, Mexico: He spotted a gigantic great white female shark with a ring of teeth marks around her side, encompassing her entire chest ...
... "On rare occasions, during mating season among sharks, 'mating scars' appear on female sharks' bodies caused by the males holding onto them. ... These scars are mostly deeper cuts and punctures, indicating a more forceful motivation such as coercive mating from the male's side," said Najafov, who captured the image in early December. He added photos of other female sharks he had photographed with large bite marks ...

After Najafov sent this image to Dr. Tristan Guttridge, who ruled out mating, suggesting it was the result of aggression [attack].

The 'iceberg' that Simone Engels photographed from Nanoose Bay, B.C., on Jan. 9 was actually a superior mirage of the peaks of the Cheam Range, about 180 kilometres away.

Re: Nautical Oddities

Thanks Gord! I love these kinds of mirages. Sometimes we see remote islands looking much closer. Just yesterday out on a point of land, I could see another point which should have been below the horizon. It's very disorienting.

Another fascinating mirage is at low tide, when the brown rocks of a distant island can look much taller than they really are. For example, if the tide range is 8', and the vegetation on the island is three or four times that height, from a distance it looks like the island is 3/4 rock and only 1/4 greenery, instead of the other way around.

Rare blanket octopus videoed at Lady Elliot Island [GBR]
Blanket octopuses are a small group of rarely-seen octopuses, in the genus Tremoctopus. Jacinta Shackleton encountered the young female in shallow waters, which is especially rare, as these octopuses normally live in the open ocean.

The USS “Nevada”, an Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarine, carrying 20 Trident ballistic missiles, and dozens of nuclear warheads, pulled into the Navy base at Guam, in the US Pacific Island territory on Saturday. It's the first visit of a ballistic missile submarine to Guam since 2016, and only the second announced visit since the 1980s.

The futuristic superyacht concept that can fly as well as sail
Rome-based design company Lazzarini Design Studio has dreamed up a new concept named Air Yacht that has the ability to "sail in the sky" as well as the ocean.
Renderings of the Air Yacht were released earlier this month, and the futuristic design looks every bit as outlandish as it sounds.

A 146 metre, semi-submersible expedition yacht, has hit the water, in Turkey, after a three-year conversion, at the Karmarine Shipyard.
The 'OK' has room to carry a 46m sailing yacht, and a sea plane. It also features a tennis court, outdoor cinema, and room for twenty guests.

'Dancing with the giants of the night'
Photographer Rafael Fernandez Caballero was diving at night, in the Maldives, when he captured this rare image of five whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) together. The golden light, of a boat above, illuminates the sharks feeding on plankton, rising from the depths. The image won the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2022 competition.
