Forty metres off the Italian coast, herbs, vegetables and flowers grow in six vinyl biospheres, below the sea surface. ‘Nemo’s garden’* is an underwater farm, started in 2012, to explore the possibility of growing terrestrial plants, 6 metres under the sea.

This shot, taken by photographer Giacomo d’Orlando, came third, in the environment category, in this year’s Sony World Photography Awards*.

Re: Nautical Oddities

A century-old tugboat sank into the Kaministiquia River, after taking on water, over the weekend.

The “James Whalen”, which was built in 1905, and has been moored at Kam River Heritage Park, since the city acquired it in the early 1990s, was found submerged in the river, on Sunday [May 1/22].

The ship had taken on water, and partially sunk, last year, but water was pumped out, and the tugboat was assessed, and determined to be stable. The pump system, that had been installed last year, was removed for the winter.

Once the tugboat is raised and assessed, the transportation museum group would be open to discussing the vessel's future. The original plan proposed to the city, by the Lakehead Transportation Museum Society, was to have the tug with the “Alexander Henry” [a decommissioned icebreaker, that has been turned into a museum ship], near Prince Arthur’s Landing Marina Park.

Elusive bronze-scaled ‘dragon’ of the deep caught on video off California coast

The Bathophilus flemingi, also known as the highfin dragonfish, was captured on video by a team of researchers in Monterey Bay, California. Named after the mythical creature, the torpedo-shaped fish is a predator that roams the depths of the ocean.

The fish can grow up to 16.5 cm in length and has long thin rays for fins. Scientists think the wing-like filaments can detect vibrations and can alert the fish of oncoming predators and prey.

The dragonfish uses a sit-and-wait tactic in which it hangs motionless in midwater and waits for unsuspecting crustaceans and fish to feed on, according to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). It also uses a bioluminescent filament that extends from its chin.

Re: Nautical Oddities

A massive great white shark has been recorded swimming off the New Jersey shore.

The shark is named “Ironbound”, after the West Ironbound Island, near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, where it was first spotted. The creature is 12 feet, 4 inches long and weighs an estimated 998 pounds, according to OCEARCH [1], a nonprofit marine research group, that provides open-source data about shark migration.

Ironbound was first tagged on October 3, 2019, in the waters around Nova Scotia. As part of its data collection process, OCEARCH captures and fits sharks with an electronic tracker that pings whenever they break the ocean surface.
Ironbound, migrating north, pinged in the waters off the coast of New Jersey about 10:30 p.m. on April 28, and his LATEST Z-PING was May 3, 2022, 6:36:48 AM.

The large fish is likely around 20 years old. Although formidable, Ironbound isn't the biggest shark the organization has encountered: Hueter said that OCEARCH has tagged great white sharks as long as 17.5 feet and as heavy as 4,000 pounds.

Ironbound has traveled an estimated 13,000 miles, since the organization first started tracking his movements. "He's gone back and forth from where we found him in Nova Scotia and the Florida Keys several times."

I'd also be pissed off, if I were dragged from my home, and had a tracker installed.

A minke whale was spotted in Montreal

If you're out and about near the Montreal Biosphere, you could catch a glimpse of a minke whale swimming in the Saint-Lawrence River. The whale was first spotted last night in Chenal Le Moyne — a water passage between Île Sainte-Hélène and Île Notre-Dame near Parc Jean-Drapeau.

Good for you but not good for the whale — and experts hope the animal finds its way back to safer waters.

Scientists Follow a 'Yellow Brick Road' in a Never-Before-Seen Spot of The Pacific Ocean

An expedition, to a deep-sea ridge [more than 3,000 meters deep], just north of the Hawaiian Islands, has revealed an ancient dried-out lake bed, paved with what looks like a yellow brick road.
The eerie scene was chanced upon by the exploration vessel “Nautilus” [1], which is currently surveying the Liliʻuokalani ridge within Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM)[2].
