Re: Nautical Oddities

MS “Tûranor PlanetSolar” [Switzerland] navigated the world, solely with the aid of solar power, in a westward direction, from Monaco, in 584 days, from 27 September 2010 to 4 May 2012.
“Tûranor PlanetSolar” broke two records: the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by solar boat, and the longest distance ever covered by a solar electric vehicle.
After an engine refit, she broke her own record, in 2013, crossing the Atlantic Ocean, from Las Palmas to Saint Martin, in the Caribbean, in only 22 days, four days faster than on the circumnavigation trip.
The boat was renamed “Race for Water”, in 2015, after the name of the foundation which then operated it.
In 2021, new owners, Porrima projects, renamed the ship “Porrima”.
The story of “Tûranor PlanetSolar” can be found in Kevin Desmond's “Electric Boats and Ships: a History”.

In post #1261 IslandHopper posted: Again, not an oddity, but wow! The picture has a sailboat up on the side deck of a Large Motor Vessel.
Reminds me of the British yacht Moonraker that I saw in San Juan, PR in 1989. Up on the aft deck--with "T/T Moonraker" on the side--was a small jeep.

Re: Nautical Oddities

And not just any old sailboat on that superyacht. Widely believed to be a “Wally” sitting on the side deck of Tatoosh, Paul Allen’s previous vessel. And there’s a similarly sized motor yacht on the other side to balance the load.

How about this one. 250,800 GT. 20 decks. Up to 9,950 people on board (crew + passengers).
What’s not to like?! [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Sadly, that may not actually be an "oddity" any more.

Re: Nautical Oddities

In late July, almost 100 long-finned pilot whales left the deep, usually cold waters where they live. Together they came to the coast of Cheynes Beach, in western Australia, and huddled into a massive heart shape [if your heart were shaped like 100 black whales].
Then, collectively, they stranded themselves on the shore.
As soon as they lost the support of the water, their chest walls crushed their internal organs.
They, literally, broke their hearts.
