Call me Ishmael…

I'm a high school English teacher. So I wanted to be a literary character.

Starbuck, as many of you know (hey, you, asleep in the back of the class, perhaps you'd like to explain this to the rest of us?) is the noble first mate to cap'n Ahab in Melville's American classic… anyone?

Anyone?

Bueller?

Moby Dick, or, The Whale

Hey, it was either that or Boo Radley, and there ain't nothin' nautical about that. Sheesh.

You must not be alone, below from a Gozzard 36 listing

"SARAFINA" is an exceptional example of this popular cruiser designed with a couple in mind.

Marine + Ness = Mariness
Because we're trying to get onto a "marine" lifestyle, and the last name is Ness.

My dad was drinky and that made me drinky at school which followed me to the surf club and then to the aquatic club and so on and so on.

Funny.
We have both a Starbuck and an Ismael on this forum.
But no Ahab?

High school English teachers rock!
But they work waaaay to hard.

At the year end of Grade 9 our Math Teacher / Principal liked to indulge himself and the rest of the class, by voicing our character flaws and predicting our usually dismal futures.
(Yes he was an A-hole).

He opined that while I was smart enough, I would always be a drifter and never amount to much.

So I took that as a challenge to be the best drifter I could possible be and have since found peace only when cruising well past the drop-off.

Going to sea had always been my dream as a young boy. I signed on as a cadet (apprentice deck officer) and boarded my first ship when I was seventeen. It was a 450 foot tramp steamer, sailing under the Red Ensign with officers from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and UK. The crew was from what is now known as "developing nations". I was dressed like most teenagers in that era, red nylon jacket, T shirt and jeans. I boarded the vessel and reported to the Kiwi First Mate. He took one look at me and said, "Christ, you'll never make a sailor". He then promptly dubbed me "Vasco" after Vasco Da Gama. I guess it was Kiwi humour. The name followed me through my career in the Merchant Navy.

Virtual because we're close to becoming fulltime cruisers, and Vagabond conjurs up a romantic view of the lifestyle.
But, right now we're Vagabonds in the Virtual world of the internet, roaming dozens of sites as we do our research...
Ironically I had no idea Vagabonds were also great liveaboards, in fact I'd never heard of them, but now they're on the list of possibles.
