The real insanity is that they think they're going to get $5,000 for that abomination. I suspect that in the end it will be abandoned, and then the taxpayers will have to pay several times that much to dispose of it.

Re: Post the Worst "For Sale" Picture You've Seen.

That hull looks ancient. While the ply is egregious, covering it with tarp like that may be the only thing that's kept it alive. Fresh water (i.e. rain) is death to a carvel hull. Given not enough $ to restore properly, this is an OK way to prevent further deterioration. I'd shake his hand for making SOME effort to keep water out, as opposed to the usual complete neglect, instead of being offended.

Re: Post the Worst "For Sale" Picture You've Seen.

How would you describe this engine's condition?

This is from a sale listing for a project boat, and it is described as a project. No mention of any engine working.

I think the engine is a good example of what a typical boat buyer does NOT want to see in a boat ad.

However, there is another way of looking at these photos. These two photos are what one does want to see in a photo, prior to traveling to the boat.

Why?
They are clear photos, sharply focused, large enough to see some details, and with enough light to see things. So, not so bad as boat sale photos, and better than some who tend to not show the true condition or interiors or the bad things about a boat.

Just a boat in poor condition.

The other photo shows the current state of the boat's interior.

If anyone wants this boat (Southern Cross 31) the seller is asking $6,000.

What about this one? This has to be the worst:

They claim it is for salvage... but... I dunno....

and I got worried when they said... to come at night for the pieces....

ps. The box fan is clean, in working condition, just a bit sandy......

Yes, exactly. These are GOOD "For Sale" pictures. Arguably the pictures are better than the boat, but that's subjective.

Re: Post the Worst "For Sale" Picture You've Seen.

Okay, this is not a picture. Just a complaint about a TOTALLY STUPID website for selling boats! Which one? Popyachts.com

Seriously. These people will not let you look at the boats for sale unless you register. WHAT!!??!! Could they BE any more stupid!?!

Let's do a quick mental exercise. How long would Walmart have stayed in business if, when he opened the first one, Sam Walton had stood at the door with a clip-board and told potential customers, "You can't come inside to look around until after you register"?

That's right. Not darned long at all! Probably wouldn't have finished that first day! I mean, for God's sake! Even "membership" stores like Sam's Club, Costco, and the like will let you come in and look around, check prices, see what they have, before they force you to sign up.

Okay, rant over. I feel better now.

Re: Post the Worst "For Sale" Picture You've Seen.

So a few months ago I recommend a boat to a kid of friend of mine. He ignored it at first, but then his parents saw it in the yard and he looked at the Yachtworld add once more. Now he's hot afire to get this boat. So he calls up the broker to go see the boat and gets told "It's only available for viewing of you have a guaranteed bank loan." ??????

I would trust these folks with my life, they are not given to exaggeration, are life time boat owners, and full time live aboards. They were stunned by the brokers response. And this boat has been for sale for about 6 years.

Nice boat, good representation in yacht world. It's pretty much a bare hull with spars, sails, running engine, and NO interior. Not like it's gonna attract many buyers anyway. Kinda makes you scratch your head.

If recall correctly this same kid was interested in another boat a couple of years ago and the broker never returned his calls. In the meantime he bought a nice boat he has been living on, but now wants something different, more suitable for his family. So it's not like he's a deadbeat or inexperienced.

That's like the section in the boat show where the - implied, at least - pricing is "if you have to ask, you can't afford it!"
