Bull****.

Plenty of threads are already closed because they are NOT related to sailing... FACT.

Re: Science & Technology News

I began a new thread last week that was closed because it "Was not related to sailing".

Personally I believe it was closed by admin because it exposed the weakness and vulnerability of certain members here who complained to admin.

Your choice of wording certainly discredits your posting. "Bull" implies a profane retort. It seems to be a few whiners who go complaining to mommy that somebody hurt their feelings who get threads shut down. So long as a posting uses civilized language and is not a personal attack, what harm can it do? The whiners need to grow up.

The pandemic’s true death toll

On 1 November, the global death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic passed five million, official data suggested.

It has now reached 5.5 million.

But that figure is a significant underestimate.

Records of excess mortality — a metric that compares all deaths recorded with those expected to occur — show that many more people have died in the pandemic. Working out how many more is a complex research challenge.

Some official data are flawed, and more than 100 countries do not collect reliable statistics on deaths at all.

Efforts to correct the record use methods including satellite images of cemeteries, door-to-door surveys and machine-learning computer models that extrapolate estimates from available data.

Re: Science & Technology News

‘Killer’ T cells still recognize Omicron

Evidence is building that specialized immune cells called T cells can recognize variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, including Omicron, even when antibodies can’t.

In people who have been infected or vaccinated, neutralizing antibodies bind to a handful of regions on the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. When those sites mutate, antibodies can’t recognize the virus, and protection fades.
T cells, however, are more resilient. By killing infected cells, T cells can limit the spread of infection — and potentially reduce the chance of serious illness.

The findings raise the question of whether researchers assessing the potential efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines should look at T-cell responses, and not just the levels of antibodies they trigger.

NASA Flies Into the Heart of Winter Storm
While heavy snowfall and whiteout conditions brought the Greater Toronto Area's (GTA) Monday morning commute to a standstill, NASA’s P-3 Orion flew into the worst of it, to conduct the first study of its kind in 30 years.
Upon the forecast of Monday’s epic snowstorm, NASA’s IMPACTS Team (Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast-Threatening Snowstorms) assembled its research aircraft, and took aim at the heaviest snow bands, including sections of the Niagara Peninsula, Golden Horseshoe, and GTA, extending through to Guelph.

Well that little eruption which official estimates say the So2 was only 400,000 tons it sure is giving a big signature and getting bigger every day.

I said just one good eruption away.
Is this one of them?
