The past few weeks or so have been a very busy time for the Sun. Our star has undergone a series of giant eruptions that have sent plasma hurtling through space.

Perhaps the most dramatic was a powerful coronal mass ejection and solar flare that erupted from the far side of the Sun on February 15 just before midnight. Based on the size, it's possible that the eruption was in the most powerful category of which our Sun is capable: an X-class flare.

Because the flare and CME were directed away from Earth, we're unlikely to see any of the effects associated with a geomagnetic storm, which occurs when material from the eruption slams into Earth's atmosphere.

According to SpaceWeatherLive [2], which tracks solar activity, the Sun has erupted every day for the month of February, with some days featuring multiple flares. That includes three of the second-most powerful flare category, M-class flares: an M1.4 on February 12; an M1 on February 14; and an M1.3 on February 15. There were also five M-class flares in January.

The mild geomagnetic storm that knocked 40 newly launched Starlink satellites from low-Earth orbit followed an M-class flare that took place on January 29. Ejecta from a solar eruption usually take a few days to reach Earth, depending how fast the material is traveling. The remaining flares that have taken place in February have so far been in the milder C-class category.

However, while it might sound intimidating, this is pretty normal for our Sun, as it ramps up its activity towards and during solar maximum – the most dynamic time during its activity cycle.

Solar maximum is due to take place around July 2025.

Nothing big in that nothing cracked even m2 class and the Carrington event was a full X35. So several thousand times larger than any that have yet been released . So nothing to write home about kids.

As the Sun is the current subject, the local - to me - Culham JET project has just broken all records for Atomic Fusion experiments. Although the experiment was only run for long enough to gather real time operating data and only produced a modest amount of power, the modelling on this will be reproduced at the Industrial sized Fusion Reactor in France.
It is moving forward folks........................

Chemists Discover a Range of Environmental Contaminants in Fracking Wastewater

Fracking has already raised the ire of environmentalists, for its effects on the planet, but new research [1] sends up another red flag: The wastewater, produced by the complicated oil and gas drilling process, is loaded with toxic and cancer-causing contaminants, that threaten both people, and wildlife.

In fracking, water, that contains a number of additives, is used in the drilling process. This injected water mixes with groundwater, and resurfaces as a waste byproduct, containing both the additives, and contaminants from the drilling site.

In this study [1], researchers analyzed untreated fracking wastewater samples from the Permian Basin and Eagle Ford formation, both in Texas, and found 266 different dissolved organic compounds.

They included: a pesticide called atrazine; 1,4-dioxane, an organic compound that is irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract; pyridine, a chemical that may damage the liver; and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which have been linked to skin, lung, bladder, liver and stomach cancers.

In the water, 29 elements were also detected, including rare earth elements, selenium and hazardous metals such as chromium, cadmium, lead and uranium, according to the study.

A Stanford University study shows chaos reigns earlier in midlatitude weather models as temperatures rise. The result? Climate change could be shifting the limits of weather predictability and pushing reliable 10-day forecasts out of reach.

Deloitte Report: Inaction on Climate Change Could Cost the US Economy $14.5 Trillion by 2070

A new report released today from the Deloitte Economics Institute shows that the United States economy could gain $3 trillion if it rapidly decarbonizes over the next 50 years. This once-in-a-generation transformation could add nearly 1 million more jobs to the US economy by 2070, according to the report, "The Turning Point: A new economic climate in the United States."...

The report sets out a scenario with four key stages for the U.S. climate transition:

1) Between now and 2025, the public and private sectors make bold decisions to rapidly transition to renewable energy. This involves transforming the electricity value chain, such as storage and transmission, that enables parallel and synchronized advances in the mobility, industrial and food systems.

2) From 2026 to 2040, the acceleration to net-zero creates major economic shifts in policy, energy systems, investment priorities and consumer behavior.

3) From 2041 to 2050—which is the turning point where the benefits of transition outweigh the costs—decarbonization of high-emission industries is almost complete. The costs of sustainable technologies decrease, and wider net economic gains are realized.

4) In 2050 and beyond, the U.S. economy is radically transformed and is more globally competitive in core industries. The economy achieves net-zero emissions, operating in a world that keeps global warming to below 2°C.

BioNTech plans to make vaccines in shipping containers
BioNTech wants to use shipping containers as standardised vaccine factories, to expand capacity worldwide. The firm plans to send its containerised mRNA factories to parts of the world that lack their own manufacturing capabilities. The first will arrive in an undisclosed country in Africa towards the end of 2022.

Africa accounts for just 3.6% of doses administered globally, partly because of hesitancy but mainly because it has struggled to get supplies and distribute them.

Scientists find world's oldest evidence of a shark attack — and it isn't pretty

In a new study [1], from the University of Oxford, archeologists shared evidence of what could be the earliest known shark attack, in recorded history — a 3,000-year-old human skeleton, marked with gashes and puncture wounds.

Highlights:
• Oldest recorded shark attack in the world.
• Adult male victim likely alive at the time of attack.
• Victim suffered fatal injuries [at least 790 injuries on the body's remains].

As long as we're joking, here:

A conservative found a magic genie's lamp, and rubbed it. The genie said, "I will grant you one wish."
He said, "I wish I were smarter".
So the genie made him a Liberal.

Q: What do you get when you offer a right-wing conservative a penny for his thoughts?
A: Change.

Q: How do you confuse a conservative?
A:You don't. They're born that way.

More than 99.9% of studies agree: Humans caused climate change.

More than 99.9% of peer-reviewed scientific papers agree that climate change is mainly caused by humans, according to a new survey of 88,125 climate-related studies.

The research updates a similar 2013 paper revealing that 97% of studies published between 1991 and 2012 supported the idea that human activities are altering Earth’s climate. The current survey examines the literature published from 2012 to November 2020 to explore whether the consensus has changed.

All this means is they are ignoring more truths

Re: Science & Technology News

The Maunder Minimum is coming around again in 5 to 10 years. The last time it happened, about 400 years ago, there were two years without a summer. It took 20 or 30 years for things to get back to "normal". It was basically a mini ice age. This cycle has been reliable for many thousands of years.

Mankind cannot change the climate via anything we do. 99% of scientists are whores. Their "results" always jibe with their paymasters' desires.

The only thing that changes Earth's climate is our variable star, Sol. When the Earth heats up, so does Mars and Jupiter. When the Earth cools down, so does Mars and Jupiter.

It doesn't really matter what you were taught, when all you learned were lies.
