Ship sinks off shetlands

BBC News - Major search after ship overturns off north of Scotland

Quote:
A major search operation has been launched after a vessel overturned off the north of Scotland.

Eight people are reported to have been on board the Cypriot-registered Cemfjord, a cargo ship carrying cement.

The upturned hull was found by a passing ferry in the Pentland Firth.

Four lifeboats, two rescue helicopters and other vessels are searching for the crew. i

My first post... but, the more i read about "issues" with boats going down. More i want to quit reading.. Seems daily. Obviously not a cruiser in this case, but.... doom and gloom on here from what i read.

Perspective of a newbie...

Not doom and gloom. More about good seamanship and not getting lazy.

Went down quick,, no mayday.

Most likely something heavy shifted.

What a strange incident. No radio calls, no epirbs, no distress at all.

It was heavily loaded.. likely got swamped by a rogue with everyone either below or on the bridge.. wouldn't last much more than a couple of minute in those temps... gets lumpy (er) in that stretch in winter.

Re: Ship sinks off shetlands

There were no distress calls when the Edmund Fitzgerald went down 11/10/75. And there was another ship within 10 miles distance. One moment it was on the radar screen and the next it wasn't. Rogue waves may well have been involved.

Re: Ship sinks off shetlands

yes, north of Scotland is not a good place this time of year. Probably one of the worst stretches of water in the Northern hemisphere at any time, but much worse in winter.

If they had been hit by a wave at night, they may have only had one person on watch.. and if they had been away from the bridge or even thrown across the bridge away from the radio.. nothing would have helped them
