Sitting Around in Newport, RI

So here I am sitting in a hotel room in Newport RI one of those sailing capital type of places! Looking out the window at all the boats in the harbor wishing I could be on one.

I thought I was scheduled to come to a sails meeting, just to show up and find it was a sales meeting.

Almost like the powers that be in the company knew how to rub it in on me.

Got to remember to read those meeting requests a little closer from now on!

Yeah, you show up in your sperry topsiders, cutoffs and your aloha shirt, with some zinc oxide on your nose and everyone is looking at you, like you are the strange one.

I hate when that happens, at least it's not snowing.

Shoulda brought your boat. Then the trip wouldn't be totally wasted.

Lotta good day charter options available to get on the water.

Go to Newport Ship Yard to see mega yachts.

Re: Sitting around in Newport, RI

A few years ago, I was in Newport to do a two day training for some folks. We stayed in what seemed like a pretty bland hotel from the land side though I thought it backed on the water. My ground floor room had a door out the back, but the curtains were all closed. Since it was raining and I still had some prep to do, I didn't bother to look. After a couple of hours I was going stir crazy so stepped out the back door onto a small lawn between me and the docks. Right in front of me were three of the old 12-meters just sitting waiting for admirers. Given the rain, there was no one else around. It was a good while before I found my way back inside.

If you have time, check out the International Yacht Restoration School on Thames St. You can see the boats that are works in progress. The big project currently is the Cornet which I used to see every day in Gloucester as a kid.

Re: Sitting around in Newport, RI

When we started our full time cruising in Jax, FL in May '05 it was WAY too hot, we eventually got to Newport, what a great destination! Don't miss the Seamans Church. But, the 12 meters at full sail though the anchorage must be seen to believed! 20' off your beam!
New England
The Jazz fest was great also, can't wait to get back, but we seem to be stuck in the EC, Oh Well! Soon Maybe!?

Well, it's a good thing you didn't have a sails meeting on the Chesapeake today, cause it would have been a motor meeting. 3 knots or less all day.
I even ran my extra handerchief up the mast to catch that extra zephyr.
