Re: SSSSM - Part Deux

I finally got done reading all the posts in this thread. 2 weeks... Wasted? I don't think so.
Interesting lot here...
So here I am, 2 ex's, I got the boat of course, and I got a small income to live off of. Reading the posts, I wonder, Solo sail and just be a free spirit or try to link up with someone. Tough decision, only time will tell.
I see that many of you are solo sailors and enjoy it. I do too.
It comes down to the personality of each of us, what we yearn for, as it were.
So here I am, lurking in the dark corners of this thread.... Watching and listening...
BTW, I have been on Findacrew and have had lots of offers to join me by both men and women. After reading many of the horror stories of part time crew from hell, I figure to be leary. INterview and coastal before offshore passages. SHake down cruises of both boat and crew.
But to have someone that is a constant? That would be the real thing.
Back to the corner Jim... Stay... Or hell with it, just shake out a reef and go sailing.
Good strong passages to all!

Re: SSSSM - Part Deux

Yes you can! No you shouldn't! Here's why: Solo sailing is dangerous. On any passage of more than 36 hours give or take you have to sleep. Who's keeping watch while you sleep? Not important you say? Very important most of us say.

More over what happens if something happens to you? You trip going down the companion way and break your leg. That hurt, but it won't kill you, except the boat is merrily sailing along and perhaps you end up in Antarctica? You really want to find at least one person to crew with you, two would be better it makes for less demanding watches.

My $0.02 anyways!

Thomas

Re: SSSSM - Part Deux

I agree ...Even though I haven't made the transition (july 2012) I would definitely want to have another person on board. Safety, friendship etc...

cheers

I agree on the solo sailing dangers. And will attempt to get a crew onboard for any over 36 hours sails. There are plenty available, just are they dependable and safe? To be seen .... But LIfe goes on with or without us. That is our choice.
