I think you'll find that you do indeed, need a Visa, if traveling by private Boat.

Here is what the State Department says are the only exceptions to not requiring a visa if you are a Canadian citizen.

As a Canadian, there is special dispensation to traveling to the USA as opposed to most other countries. And vice-versa.

Before 9/11 I remember going through a US border point with friends of mine who owned a ranch just north of the border. The conversation went something like this:

Customs: Hi, Bob, going to Havre?
Bob: Yup, be back in a few hours.
Customs: Hi Jim and Dennis. (looking at me)... Your new, work on the ranch?
Me: Nope, just helping out for weaning time.
Customs: Bob, is that guy trustworthy (pointing at me).
Bob: Nope, but we like him anyways.
Customs: (laughing) See you guys next time.

That would never happen now I'm sure, but it did 14 years ago. Coming back it was much the same, except the Canadian Border guys needed to see my ID.
