Quite a few had been lifting up and all caulking is gone, so I'm just guessing that maybe the blue or whatever was holding them down could be compromised.

They should have known better and used red, its so much better and faster

Multi's not sailing to weather is a popular myth.
Charter cats often are under canvassed on purpose and fit that description, but that's not all multi's. Daggerboards/centerboards make a lot of difference as well.

I routinely make 90 degree or better tacks to weather, even with all the extra stuff aboard to make life easy.
