A somewhat gnarlier version for the math geeks out there:

A balance beam scale has 2 equal beakers of water, one on each side. Beakers are the same, water level's the same. All same-same so far.

One beaker has a golf-ball sized hollow sphere (of insignificant mass, so it floats) tethered to the bottom of the beaker on a thread (of insignificant mass) so it's suspended in the middle of the water.

The other beaker has an identically sized steel ball (so it sinks) suspended from the ceiling on a thread (of insignificant mass) so it's also suspended in the middle of the water.

Which one's heavier? That is, which side of the scale goes down?

(I was asked this question as part of my 9-hour entrance exam to work at the Evil Empire, so I had to answer in real-time, in front of my interrogator, after answering the above rock/boat/pool question.)
Beaker with steel ball becomes heavier.

As the ball is lowered towards the water the string initially supports all it's weight. But as the ball increasingly becomes submerged, part of its weight is supported by the water, thus making that beaker heavier.

Technically, the "stupid" scientist is correct. Since the water of the fresh-water iceberg is less dense than the salty ocean, when it melts it will occupy more volume than the "hole" in the ocean that it currently occupies, thus (infinitesimally) increasing the volume of water in the ocean, and (infinitesimally) increasing the sea level.

Ah, yes. Missed that. Water levels, the same, not amount of water the same, so they must be the same size.

Yes, folks, we have a WIENER! With a nice, succinct answer.

Although it took me considerably longer, with much verbal dancing around, before I arrived there.

Microsoft (indeed, much of the tech industry) has interesting interview techniques. At other places I've been gang-interviewed by 8 or 9 with these sorts of questions.

At Microsoft, I didn't get any "Hi, how are you, what wonderful things have you done?" Literally my first question, on walking in the door, was "Could you please write a program to shuffle a deck of cards? Here's a pen, there's the whiteboard, we have an hour." The first of 9 such hours...

And now, back to our regularly scheduled jokes (& my apologies for hijacking the thread)
