There is nothing funny about the joke, it's his delivery.

FedEx and UPS are exploring a merger.

Fedex is like my ex, no communication, no respect for my stuff, it never seems to come, and somehow it makes me think it's my fault.

Nor, for that matter, where we are in relation to Traal as, unhelpfully, the Guide does not point out this probably essential bit of intergalactic travel advice.

However, it DOES point out that the Bugblatter Beast is so ineffably dense, that if you can't see it, it assumes it can't see you. So carrying a sight-impaired persons walking cane is a good tip - if you ever come across Traal or it's most infamous resident.

Douglas Adams has a lot to answer for...!!!
