I recall the outrage in the early Seventies when the then-HEadmaster of my high school insisted girls walk up a short flight of stairs outside his office - if he could see their underwear, their skirt was too short....

...and if it wasn't 'regulation underwear' they were sent home to change.

I kid you not - this actually happenend.

Nah, he was way too straight-laced for that.

After furore erupted he suggested getting his wife or the Matron to do the inspecting....

He just didn't get it....

And by an astonishing coincidence, his name was Withers - and withering was the only description for the looks he received from women.

Is that nominative determinism, I wonder?
