I’m told there is only one word that becomes longer, when you add two letters; and that another word actually becomes shorter, when you add two letters.

Half true.

Any number of words get longer when you add 2 letters to them, First among them being "Long", greater and greater; strong and stronger

But only one word becomes"shorter" when you add 2 letter, "short".

You are right about shore but Sorte is French and the rules of the say English is the language of CF so it doesn't count.

I was a little up in the air about Soter, it is an ancient Greek title that might have made it into English. Checked my OED and it wasn't there, so I'm ruling against it. So sorry. I did however find the word "sotch" which is kind cool.

There was no mention of deleting letters in the original problem statement so technically Shortly, Shore-side and various other words count too.

Even more technically no mention was made about whether rearranging letter order was acceptable.......
