USS Freedom in Milwaukee for its Commissioning [Pics included]

Here's an article in the Milwaukee paper, the Journal-Sentinel, about the Navy's new Littoral Combat Ship.

These Littoral ships are designed to operate within 200 miles of shore, and be able to swap out packages allowing them to transition from hunting mines and pirates to naval combat with just a quick stop in port.

Here's some pics. I wish there were a few more of the hull, because that doesn't look much like any contemporary Navy combat vessel I've seen.

I don't know if this is old news or not since I'm no Navy buff, but it's some pretty sweet stuff that's happening close to home for me

With the flat plating and the sharp corners it looks like it is designed to minimize radar return. Its certainly not a stealth ship though.

Ker-splash!

From the US Navy fact file:

The US Navy -- Fact File

The second boat, the USS Independence, LCS2 is being built in Mobile and will be homeported in Norfolk.

For more info on this class of boat go to navy.mil and do a search on LCS or USS Freedom.
