While the exact location of the wreck may be kept secret, here is a chart showing the estimated route on its last mission, with estimated place it was sunk.

I am also adding a photo of Indianapolis in her dazzle paint scheme used in 1944. Why? Because I like dazzle paint.

Yes, they did. But they were hit when they were RETURNING from that mission.

During WW2 most capitol ships of this size were always accompanied by a screen of destroyers.

The Indianapolis saga is well known here on Tinian; one aspect that I find most compelling is the treatment of the Captain, Charles Butler McVay III. His life was a tragedy from the sinking onward. The injustice of his treatment at the hands of the US Navy was finally posthumously rectified in 2000. More about him in the Wikipedia article.

Tragic story. In addition to clearing his name, those up the chain of command who used him as a scape goat should have been court martialed.
