Video: Octopus Takes a Walk Out of the Water

Maybe Darwin WAS right!

Coolest video of an octopus going for an extended walk on land.

I have a degree in zoology. That behavior is right up there with octopi using tools and hunting sharks. Leaving a crab was probably not an accident but I don't know what it means. These are intelligent animals.

Re: Video: Octopus Takes a Walk Out of the Water

I saw one in a bar yesterday. It asked for a beer...The bar tender thought..."what the hell" and charged $20 for the beer. 10 minutes later it asked for another and the bar tender charged it $40...Later the bar tender says..."Hey...we don't get many Octopi in this bar". The Octopus replies..."At these prices, you won't get many more...

I've heard they have a mass of neurons at the top of each leg as though they have eight brains. Very clever creature ... however I only have one brain and two legs and I can walk on land.

Thinks, after his amorous advances are rejected," of course I'm like an octopus, what does she think I am, a human"

Re: Video: Octopus Takes a Walk Out of the Water

There was a case of an aquarium that had various fish in many separate tanks.Fish were disappearing out of their tanks, even individual fish with no companions. They set video surveillance. The damn octopus was getting out of its tank,at night, and raiding other tanks before returning home before dawn.

What I was thinking was- I will eat squid any day, but I consider octopus kinda up there with eating dog or cat or monkey. I don't really think we understand how smart they really are.
One other advantage to being an invertebrate- how would you like to dive to 12000 feet without problems??

There's so much about intelligence that we don't yet understand, human learning having been very human centric in the past. There's a very interesting article on the octopus here : Inside the mind of the octopus | Orion Magazine

It is fascinating to me that they live such a short life that they have very little time in which to learn.

Swarm intelligence is another interesting area of study. Ants are an example of a creature with seemingly little intelligence invested in an individual member of the species and yet a colony is able to accomplish some remarkable feats.

Re: Video: Octopus Takes a Walk Out of the Water

I'm not sure whether youtube is being cute in using the domain be or if they are streaming out of Belgium. I suspect they just bought the domain. I've noticed it seems to be what the domain is if you click the share button and copy from there. As for the rest of the url it's generated when you upload; a path only a computer could love.
