Never anchor without checking how much chain you have down and what the rise of tide is. On a similar note when going ashore in the dinghy make sure it is either well secured or above the highest possibly tide line. Embarrassing else, especially on a remote lonely anchorage.

I have tried telling various female guests this, especially when the wind gets up but so far it hasn't worked.

The reason it is said to be bad luck is because sailors would piss off women if they said it made good sense. From what I can tell a woman on a boat really best as part of a couple. I am trying hard not to piss off anyone here and if I do I apologize.
