People like to ruffle the feathers of others.

Prigs...and there are infestations of them everywhere. I have had several encounters with them here on CF.

Prig: a person who displays or demands of others pointlessly precise conformity, fussiness about trivialities, or exaggerated propriety, especially in a self-righteous or irritating manner.

My problem with labeling people like that is that sometimes being fussy about what others see as "trivialities" on a boat, is part of a needed discipline
I would rather have someone detailed oriented than an airhead!
Is that why the call them ...
Petty Officers?

Spot on. One person's OCD is routinely another person's saving grace...literally the second one survives because the first. It's ultimately the function of OCD.

Otherwise regarding trolls, Robert Sapolsky discussing baboon behavior in this documentary on stress:
"If you live in a place like this [Maasai Mara Reserve] and you're a baboon, and you only have to work 3 hours a day getting your calories...if you only have to work 3 hours a day you got 9 hours of free time to make someone else just miserable."
[Much play fighting, teasing, and so forth to pass time; ultimately better for survival than napping]
