Navy loses contact temporarily with sub off Florida - CNN.com

US Navy - particularly submarine force - has NO sense of humor about this stuff...

The Navy would prefer not to be known for having a sense of humor. It's why they are not and can never be Cruisers!

I thought it was normal for subs to be out of contact at times. Especially the missile subs. I suppose this one missed a routine check in or something?

From the statement:

“During the early evening of March 13, units of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (CSG) received a series of indications that USS San Juan (SSN 751), a Los Angeles class submarine conducting pre-deployment training with the Enterprise CSG, was in distress ...
Losses of communications, followed by the reported sighting of a red flare, are distress indicators. These indicators, combined with establishing communications with only two of the three submarines operating with the Enterprise CSG, was sufficient information to activate missing submarine procedures ...

In the war games she was involved in, the subs fire a yellow flare to indicate "BANG YOU'RE DEAD" to the carrier. This means that the sub has successfully infiltrated the battle group and obtained the final fire control solution needed to take the shot.

So maybe... just maybe... the BG commander was p**sed at having been sunk and decided to cause some embarrassment to the sub skipper?

Those airedales just HATE it when they get sunk....
