Ahoy from Snowy Boston !

Hey all, very happy to be here.

My name is George and my wife and I are brand new to sailing. We took a few informal lessons near the end of last season and will be taking classes/getting our basic keelboat certification at the beginning of this season. I've read The New Complete Sailing Manual by Steve Sleight at least twice in the offseason! I'm a little obsessed with sailing right now. I'm an engineer and the small nuances of control inputs (sheets, vang, backstay, etc) to change the aerodynamics of the sail interest me. Also, being on the water has just been lots of fun.

Anyways, very excited to be here. I'm sure I'll learn a lot. The club at which we will be learning uses Sonar 23s with custom (flatter) sails. Any helpful hints there?

I'll keep you up to date on our progress. The season starts May 1 and I'll be looking to start as soon as the first class is offered. The plan (for now) is to become members of the club and use their Sonars for some day sailing on Boston Harbor. Eventually, I want to own a boat but that is for later. I'm 27, relatively newly married, and will have to see what life throws at us in the next year or two (ehem, babies?).

Ah to be all young again in life and sailing! Boston harbor isn't that great really for sailing between all the traffic and the dangers!

Get a boat instead of a baby. Cheaper and less work

I hear ya about the traffic. However, it does force one to learn the rules of the road in terms of giving way. Rule #1: When the Spirit of Boston comes a knockin', get out of the way (although the wake is fun).

Re: Ahoy from Snowy Boston!

I used to belong to the Boston Harbor Sailing Club (almost 20 years ago). I loved sailing their Pearson 26's all around the islands there - usually at night. I would typically go out past Castle Island, under the Long Island Bridge, up past Hull Gut, around George's Island, through The Narrows, past Nixes Mate and back. During longer day trips, I used to sail to Cohasset Harbor for lunch. Good times.

Have fun with it.

Ahoy from Snowy Nova Scotia!

Days like these I wish I lived in Florida!

George

NB: Watch out! Sailing is addictive! Pretty soon you'll be looking at pretty boats instead of pretty girls!

Re: Ahoy from Snowy Boston !

The last two years, there was lots of snow where I'm at in Germany. This year, I only saw ONE day of snow. Most of the winter has been in mid to high 40's until this week where it's been in the 20s. This morning I left for work at 11F and now (1030pm) it's about 20F.

I wish I saw some more snow... Could use an extra day off from work.
