Allow me to introduce myself

My name is capt. Blaine V. I was born and raised on the bayous of south Louisiana. My whole life has been on vessels of all types from John boats which we call “flat” boats to offshore supply and crew vessels. I got my 100ton masters lic. In 2009 when I turned 20 years old. Worked in the oil fields running crew vessels up to 195’. Got tired of the schedule 28/14. I quit and haven’t been back since. Found me a 25.5 hunter on lake Travis in 2019. At that point I had never sailed a day in my life. Lived on it for 6 months there at the marina dock. Finally I said screw it. Took me five nights to even make any head way! After five nights of cursing throwing fits screaming the light bulb went off and I was underway making way! I’ve been hooked ever since!!! Currently docked in the port of Jean Lafitte Louisiana my home town! I trailer her from lake Travis to Galveston, then single handed her to her current port of call!! To say I learned a lot on the trip here is an understatement. After running aground 4 times in the ditch between Galveston and port author. I decided to give the outside a try! Out of Sabine pass I went. 48 hrs later I was water logged extremely tired searching for a way back in the ditch!!! Finally made it home. Where I’m currently fixing all the things I need to fix for her to be more semi-blue water ready!! Studying, learning, staying in shape! Next port of call south Florida!!!

Re: Allow me to introduce myself

Hello Blaine, you’ve certainly made a change going from 195’ crew vessels to a 25.5’ sailboat. With your credentials and experience you are way ahead of most new sailors but there is still plenty to learn about handling a rather small sailboat. Good luck on your voyage to becoming a sailboat cruiser. Lots of good resources here on this forum. Welcome.

That’s quite an adventure on your first outing. I hope mine (when it finally happens) is a lot more boring!

Cheers

Welcome Blaine!

Here's the Cruisers Forum Classic in that department. We still miss BlackOak (he didn't die or anything - his wife made him sell the boat).

Attempted Trip to Bermuda:

Keep adventuring! (and learn your Collision Regulations and how to read a chart)
Warmly,

Now that's funny, LittleWing

Welcome to CF, Blaine! There's nothing more exciting than jumping off the deep end before knowing how to swim. Post questions here when you're stumped about something. Try not to get too bent out of shape by the curmudgeonly ones. Have fun and be safe.

Well, he did mention running aground a few times, so ColRegs and Chart-reading were the first two things that sprung to mind....
