Am I a Newbie, a Newby or a Noob?

Hello from Charleston, SC! No, I'm not a captain, but I own a small company that collects and processes blood and plasma, hence the name.

Don't currently own a boat, but grew up around small powerboats on Lake Lanier, GA and sailed a couple of little boats when I was a teen.

Chartered (with captain and mate) a boat down in BVI about 6 years ago and have been daydreaming ever since. Now, it looks like I will be able to stop dreaming and get started next year with my first sailboat, probably a catalina 30 or something similar for 20K or less. Have a family of six, so anything smaller would probably not give us enough space. Will be starting this year with sailing lessons with the goal of buying next spring.

Have been a lurker for about 2 years and have already gleaned tons of valuable information from seasoned sailors/members.

Will try my very best not to ask too many stupid questions. I'm sure every question that I can think of has already been asked and answered somewhere on this site, but sometimes they are a little hard to find.

Thanks in advance for your patience!

Tony

Welcome aboard Tony and good luck finding the ideal boat for you and your family.
With 6 kids, anything less than Noah’s Ark will probably be a bit on the small side for you but I’m sure you’ll work it out. (Bear in mind that digging a basement is not an option)
As others on this site will be happy to confirm, here, as with every other place where knowledge and experiences are freely exchanged, the only “Stupid” question is the one which remains unasked.
Good luck with your boat search….. James

Thanks James!

I meant a family of six, total. Me, my wife and 4 girls ages 6, 5 and 2 year old twins.

If it was actually 6 kids, I would probably be too medicated to blog!

In that case, I have to revise my sizing estimate;

With 5 females on board, anything smaller than Texas will be too small…

Aloha and welcome aboard!
I had very good friends who cruised with 2 very young girls and they were all delightful. Just need a bit larger boat and a separte berth area for the adults.
kind regards,

Re: Am I a Newbie, a Newby or a Noob?

Hiya,

We are an all female crew with a 6yo first mate and 4yo navigator ... I have the occasional mutiny when the swimming pool is more alluring than sailing the bay on a slow day. Your girls are at the perfect age to introduce them slowly to sailing so that in a few years you will have no choice but to take off cruising.
