'. . . and a star to steer her by'

.thanks to John Masefield for saying it so beautifully all those years ago.

Currently salt water cruising on our Caliber 40 LRC - Montamarol. Previously in fresh water on a C&C 27. Before that a Redline 25 and a Snipe over a period of 45 years or so.

It's a great addiction shared with my wife

I look forward to commentary and advice from the community.

Fair winds

Jim

Steering by the stars is great. That means you are sailing at night offshore. Very beautiful place to be.

...and the wheel's kick and the wind's song ... How I miss offshore sailing. Soon now, soon, as Javelin's keel gets assembled ...

G'day, mate. Welcome aboard. Hopefully, you will get to steer by the Southern Cross one day, something to "shoot" for. Cheers

Hello - nice to meet you. What a lovely thread title.

I love steering by the stars. It makes me feel at one with the universe, and the sense of peace, space and beauty that one feels every time is awesome.

However - I learnt my lesson once. I became so hypnotised by the beauty of my star and the shimmering water ahead whilst I was on watch (passage between Kuwait and Bahrain); that when the Skipper came back on watch three hours later my star had altered our course 90 degrees and we were heading straight for Saudi waters.

Now I remember to cross check with the compass every so often, pick a new star, and be wary of the 'star trance'!

Welcome aboard. I agree with Max, off shore at night is the best.
