Another Chesapeake Bay Newbie Saying Hello

Hey guys,

I've been scouting things out and lurking (and learning) for a while, finally saying hi. Mostly because I'm finally getting to the specifics of being able to talk about "my" boat. My partner and I have been actively searching for the past year or so, and finally put an offer on a steel Colvin gaff-rigged Saugeen Witch (34' LOD, with the bowsprite LOA is 42') this week. Yes, I know not to count my chickens before they're surveyed and ultrasounded (in the process of scheduling for the first week of May), but we're pretty excited nonetheless.

Writing from DC at the moment, but moving up near Havre de Grace/Bush River area soon, assuming all goes well we hope to keep the boat in Middle River while we get it fixed to our liking -- it's a little barebones in the amenities right now. We're looking towards eventually long-term cruising and living aboard.

He's done a lot of small boat sailing (grew up on his parent's trailer sailer) but is new to this size/complexity and, I have...we'll be generous and say ahem a bit less experience. So let me just say, as someone who's pretty new to all of this, just reading these forums has already been an invaluable resource.

Welcome to the forum. You'll like the Havre de Grace area. I was born there oh so many years ago! Beautiful place there at the head of the Chesapeake Bay.... Enjoy!

I've been to Havre de Grace a handful of a times -- the place we'll be moving to is my partner's townhouse in Abingdon and his family lives out in Jarrettsville, so I've been around the area a bit, and done some sailing on Bush River and across the way in Elk Neck.

It's a lovely town, and man, is that a good ice cream shop and candy store (though I am kind of bummed about the antiques store with the Blues Brothers statues out front closing down).

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Colvin designed some great boats. I had a friend with a smaller aluminum hulled Colvin and it was a junk rigged schooner.
regards

Just thought I'd update: the survey and ultrasound went swimmingly and we finalized the purchase last week. She's all ours!
