Dreamer in Canadian Maritimes with a question.

Hello y'all.

I am looking to get into sailing and have a question. I was planning to take sailing lessons which are mostly available in July where I live. Our summers are short and are pretty much over by September. There would not be more than 100 days of comfortable sailing weather.

I have identified a few below-30 foot sailboats in geographic proximity. What do forum members think of the idea of having the boat I am looking at sailed down to my side of the coast and get real-life sailing lessons from a seasoned hand in the process ? If this can be done, how should I go about finding such a person and what should be a reasonable expense estimation ? Transport overland should take three hours but I expect it to take almost a week by coastal route.

Any input is appreciated.

Take some local sailing lessons - and sign up now. Courses have been selling out - and early - because of a combination of YouTube and Covid.

Good luck!

Re: Dreamer in Canadian Maritimes with a question.

Welcome to CF

Were about are you? I am guessing Canada given the short season.

Trailer sailers are very popular in Europe and as you point out, you can cover a lot of mileage in a few hours on a motorway.

You need a good mast lifting arrangement, often involving two support poles and a tabernacle. Don't go too big or it gets difficult.

Something like this would be nice and easy enough to tow. A lift keel or bilge keels helps keep the weight low on the trailer and offer super creek crawling opportunities. Then lift out and take home for the winter.

Hiring a delivery captain certainly can be done. There are several active on this forum. You can find some names by browsing the "Crew Positions" classified sub-forum, or posting there.

Myself, I would be inclined to complete a few lessons before buying a boat. That will go a long way towards helping you during the boat hunting process. And you might find that you and a friend you made during lessons are capable of handling a week-long coastal transit on your own.
