Greetings from Norway

Hello hello.

Just registered on the forum so I'll take a low key intro.

Norwegian, sailing a viksund goldfish 31. Musician trying to learn how to service a diesel engine with no experience.

Currently have 4 liters of motor oil in my bilge because my newly installed oil filter literally blew off today. Can only get better from here

Hope people are doing well.

Re: Greetings from Norway

I also have a Viksund, what engine is in yours? The most likely reason for your filter incident is that the O-ring from the old filter remained attached to the base plate un noticed and the new filter seal just sat on top of the first oring..... until oil pressure built up and blew it out.
There are several other reasons why the filter can dump all the oil but check my suggestion first and if I’m wrong we can move on to the others.

Welcome to Cruisers Forum! Sorry to hear about your issue with oil, but lots of great folks in here to help you. I lived/worked in Ulsteinvik years ago.

Mine is a Nanni diesel 4.190.

I appreciate the insight! It still boggles me why it blew out, but there wasn't an O-ring from the old filter. I've ordered new filters that arrive tomorrow.

When I tried to reattach the filter that blew out I noticed it skipped on the threads. But only once and then it appeared to sit correctly. When I tried to use an oil-filter wrench to slightly tighten it up more it just popped off again.

I've never experienced anything similar. It seems the threading on the filter is messed up.. I'll give an update tomorrow when I get new filters how it turned out.

Thanks for the tips!

Re: Greetings from Norway

Hi Jojo

Is it possible you have the wrong filter. There are a few oil filters with similar but different threads. (i.e. metric vs imperial) I was a mechanic for many years and saw it a few times.
There are hundreds of filters #'s with some of the differences very slight and some very different.
Lots of shops will stock only so many brands and may not have the exact brand of the manufacturer and will substitute a cross-referenced #. Most times, this is perfectly fine. However, sometimes errors do happen.

Re: Greetings from Norway

If you have trouble finding the correct filter or if the thread protruding from the filter base is damaged, you can remove and replace that part,it simply unscrews from the base but you'll need a large socket wrench to fit the hex. Its entirely possible that Nanni has fitted a different base nipple so that you can only use OEM filters rather than the usual "off the shelf" ones for your Kubota ( I think?) based Nanni.

Yes although some may be an Allen(hex) head.

Re: Greetings from Norway

I got the new filter today and it installed flawlessly. So that was a relief at least.

I truly appreciate all the friendly and helpful replies!
