Hello

A complete novice here hoping to get a chance to learn some basic sailing techniques such as heaving to. Dream is to spend a lot of time cruising the Mediterranean. If I sound ignorant, it is mostly that I am so try to be patient. Looking forward to learning from the good people on this board.

Re: Hello

Hi Nautes, welcome to Cruisers forum. You may wish to get a bit more specific on your location as there may be opportunities for sailing exposure based on location. Here are some categories of recommendation that you are likely to get to get some additional sailing experience/exposure.

1. Read books and watch youtube. All the basic techniques and concepts are as well documented there ... plenty of videos on basic sailing, heaving to and things like Mediterranean mooring are well cover many times over.... and that is all fine and well but the more useful and fun stuff is actually going sailing so:

2. Get some training like ASA 101 ...there are numerous providers around the US that offer that course.

3. Look for a local sailing group. Even inland states have sailing groups, many of them very active.

4. Buy a small sailboat like a Catalina 22 and get on a lake and "send it" with some basic guidance from a more experienced sailor

.... there is more than enough there to get you started and as far down the road as you would every care to go.

Re: Hello

Yes, getting started will help you see if you and your dreams will enjoy messing around in boats, or not. Something like a Cat 22 is one of the trailer sailers my Jim had before he bought a 30 footer. He just always knew he'd like to wake up somewhere new tomorrow.

Joining a small sailing club often gives you the opportunity to crew with many different skippers, and boats, too, and that gives you a leg up, learning by osmosis, and different skippering styles and different boat layouts.

Re: Hello

Welcome to CruisersForum!

I would suggest updating your profile with your general location and your boat make & model or “Looking” in the "Boat" category. This info shows up under your UserName in every post in the web view. Many questions are boat and/or location dependent and having these tidbits under your UserName saves answering those questions repeatedly. If you need help setting up your profile then click on this link: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3308797

I would happily help more if the link above is not enough.
